W&L SUFFERS 1-0 LOSS TO CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT IN NCAA REGIONAL FINALS (11/12)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Matt Boettcher's header off an assist from Oscar Gomez-Romero at the 61:10 mark gave Christopher Newport a 1-0 win over Washington and Lee in the NCAA South Region Men's Soccer Final.

The Generals outshot CNU, 12-11, but couldn't find the net for the first time all season. Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded six saves in goal for W&L, while Martin Zelada posted six saves in net for the Captains.

Washington and Lee ends its season with a school-record 19 victories against just two losses. Christopher Newport (18-2-1) will face Wisconsin-Oshkosh, winners of the NCAA Central Regional.

W&L MOVES TO NCAA SOUTH REGION CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A 4-1 WIN OVER FROSTBURG (11/11)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Washington & Lee built a 3-0 lead and then held on for a 4-1 win over Frostburg St. in the first game of the NCAA South Region semifinals at Christopher Newport Saturday night.

The Generals scored first on an unassisted goal by senior back Ryan Nelson (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) in the 19th minute and added another goal by junior midfielder David Kodack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) less than two minutes later. That was assisted by sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers).

In the second half junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) scored in the 51st minute with an assist going to senior midfielder Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads). Frostburg (16-5) then narrowed the margin to 3-1 when Adam Fletcher converted a pass from Gary Lasko, but the Bobcats gave the Generals an own goal in the 70th minute to wrap up the scoring.

W&L Goalkeeper Tim Foley made five saves as the Generals outshot Frostburg, 14-10.

The win improves Washington & Lee to 19-1. It will play Christopher Newport in the NCAA South Region finals on Sunday at 8:00 pm.

W&L CLAIMS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 1-0 VICTORY OVER VIRGINIA WESLEYAN (11/4)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) scored the game's only goal at the 19:19 mark as Washington and Lee captured the 2000 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship with a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

The lone goal was set up off a cross by senior midfielder Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) and one-timed home by Miller.

Virginia Wesleyan (12-5-3) nearly tied the game with 30 seconds left off a header by senior forward Vinnie Sciullo (Marlboro, N.Y./John Jay) that was cleared off the goal line by W&L sophomore fullback Sean Hardin (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster).

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) held the Blue Marlins at bay the entire afternoon by making nine saves, while VWC freshman goalkeeper Sean Wheaton (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced.

Senior fullback James Abadi (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic), Sciullo and Wheaton were named to the ODAC All-Tournament Team for Virginia Wesleyan.

Junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay), junior fullback Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry), Foley and Miller each earned all-tournament honors for Washington and Lee.

W&L (18-1) will now compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament with the date, time and site to be determined. 

 

W&L OUTLASTS RANDOLPH-MACON IN ODAC SEMIFINALS, 2-1 (11/3)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) headed home the game-winner with 1:29 to play in regulation off a corner kick from senior midfielder Jon Wilson (Virginia Beach, Va./Hampton Roads) to lift host Washington and Lee to a 2-1 victory over fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon in the ODAC Men's Soccer semifinals.

The win moves W&L (17-1) into the ODAC tournament finals Saturday afternoon against third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is set for 1:30 pm.

Randolph-Macon (13-6-1) started the scoring at the 13:35 mark with a penalty kick goal from senior forward Scott Eley (Petersburg, Va./Prince George). The penalty kick was set up after freshman forward Andrew Beazley (Studley, Va./Atlee) was brought down by a W&L defender in the box.

The Generals tied the game at the 43:13 mark with a goal by freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood).

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) made five saves for the Generals, while junior goalkeeper Michael Matson (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) also collected five saves for the Yellow Jackets.

W&L ADVANCES TO ODAC SEMIFINALS WITH 2-1 WIN IN OVERTIME (10/31)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior fullback Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) scored his first goal of the season six minutes into the first overtime on a penalty kick as top-seeded Washington and Lee escaped the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Men's Soccer Tournament with a 2-1 victory over eighth-seeded Guilford.

The final goal was set up after junior midfielder Noam Sorek (Atlit, Israel/Ort Hiriat Bialik) saved a header by Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) from going into the net with his hand and was given a red card.

The win gave the Generals their ninth consecutive victory and ensured that W&L will host the semifinal and final rounds on Friday and Saturday.

Junior midfielder Rick Schnatz (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) started the scoring at the 40:57 mark on a one-timer off an assist from sophomore forward Michael Stoeckle (Blacksburg, Va./North Cross).

Guilford (6-11-1) tied the game in the 70th minute on a goal off a penalty kick from Sorek.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) made three saves in the net for W&L, while freshman goalkeeper Ryan Fitzgibbons (Dayville, Conn./Killingly) kept the Quakers in the game by making six saves.

W&L (16-1) will host fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon on Friday with the time to be determined on Wednesday.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER SETS SCHOOL RECORD FOR CONSECUTIVE WINS (10/28)

DANVILLE, Va. -- Three different Generals tallied goals as Washington and Lee set a school record with eight consecutive victories in a 3-0 shutout of Averett on Saturday afternoon in men's soccer action.

The win broke the record set earlier in the season as the Generals started the year with seven straight wins. The game also marked the ninth shutout of the season for W&L (15-1).

Freshman midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) started the scoring at the 5:08 mark on an unassisted goal.

Junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) scored off an assist from junior midfielder David Kodack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) with two minutes gone in the second half.

Sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) rounded out the scoring on an unassisted goal at the 89:57 mark off an assist by sophomore midfielder Mark Reams (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass).

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) notched his fifth shutout of the season by making eight saves. Chris Barokas made five saves in the net for Averett (8-10-1).

The Generals have ended their regular season schedule and will now move into the ODAC Tournament. W&L will host a quarterfinal contest on Tuesday with the date and time to be determined on Sunday.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER POSTS SHUTOUT AT V.M.I., 3-0 (10/25)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) broke a scoreless tie at the 70:18 mark to lift Washington and Lee to a 3-0 shutout of V.M.I. on Wednesday afternoon in men's soccer action.

The win gave W&L (14-1) its seventh consecutive victory which ties a school record that the Generals set earlier this season.

Sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) scored at the 80:44 mark off an assist from junior midfielder David Kodack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) to give Washington and Lee a 2-0 lead. Senior forward Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) rounded out the scoring with two minutes remaining to seal the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) stopped all 10 shots the he faced in the net for W&L. Morgan Harris made collected four saves for the Keydets (5-9).

W&L will travel to Danville, Va., on Saturday afternoon to take on Averett in its final regular-season contest. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER SETS SCHOOL RECORD FOR WINS IN A SEASON (10/21)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Phil Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) scored with one minute remaining in double overtime as Washington and Lee set a school record for wins (13) in a dramatic 1-0 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) in men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The win broke the school record set back in 1996 when Washington and Lee finished 12-6.

Miller rebounded a cross from senior forward Jon Wilson (Virginia Beach, Va./Hampton Roads) and put home the game winner for W&L (13-1).

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) stopped all six shots that he faced. St. Mary's (7-8) was led by junior goalkeeper Micah Spiegel (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) who made six saves in the loss.

W&L will travel across town to take on V.M.I. in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER TIES SCHOOL RECORD FOR WINS (10/19)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) and sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) each scored two goals as Washington and Lee tied a school record for victories (12) with a 4-0 shutout of Bridgewater in ODAC men's soccer action on Thursday afternoon.

The only other season W&L (12-1, 8-1 ODAC) achieved 12 victories was in 1996, when it went 12-6.

The teams played to a scoreless tie at the half before the Generals exploded for five goals in the second half during an 18 minute stretch.

Grimes started the scoring in the 58th minute with a header off a feed from freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood). Grimes then gave the Generals a two-goal cushion at the 60:21 mark with another header off an assist from senior midfielder Jon Wilson (Virginia Beach, Va./Hampton Roads).

Murphy then notched two late goals to round out the scoring. Miller and Wilson both finished with two assists.

Senior goalkeeper Jordan Ginsberg (Jackson, Miss./Jackson) recorded two saves to pick up his first shutout of the season. Jon McClure made 10 saves in the net for Bridgewater (4-10-1, 1-7 ODAC).

W&L will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it hosts St. Mary's College (Md.) in a 3:00 pm contest.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT, 3-1 (10/15)

EMORY, Va. -- Three different Generals scored goals to lead Washington and Lee to a 3-1 victory over Emory & Henry on Sunday afternoon in ODAC men's soccer action.

The win gave Washington and Lee (11-1, 7-1 ODAC) its 11th win of the season which is one shy of tieing the school record of 12 set in 1996 when it went 12-6.

Freshman midfielder Phil Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) scored for the third straight game just four minutes into the contest to give the Generals a 1-0 lead.

Senior forward Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) put W&L in front 2-0 in the 55th minute off an assist from senior midfielder Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads).

Emory & Henry (2-8-3, 0-5-1 ODAC) fought back in the 72nd minute with an unassisted goal by Danny Almond. The Generals then rounded out the scoring four minutes later on a goal by sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) with an assist from freshman midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights).

W&L will return home to host Bridgewater on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 pm in its final regular-season ODAC contest.

PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) scored three minutes into overtime to give Washington and Lee a 2-1 victory over Manhattanville College in a non-conference men's soccer match on Friday afternoon.

The Valiants took an early 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game when Paul Malyszka scored off an assist from Nick Giacopelli. The teams remained scoreless for the rest of the first half.

W&L tied the score early in the second half with a goal from senior forward Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) off an assist from junior midfielder David Kodack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville).

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded eight saves in the victory.

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Phil Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) scored two goals, including the game winner just 11:54 into the game off an assist by senior midfielder Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) to lead Washington and Lee past Eastern Mennonite, 4-0, in ODAC men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

Miller's second goal of the game came at the 54:14 mark and was assisted by junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) and Wilson. Senior back Jacek Mucha (Houston, Texas/AWTY International) scored just 43 seconds later off another assist by Wilson and junior midfielder David Kodack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) to give W&L a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Acad.) tallied the game's final goal, an unassisted goal at the 87:07 mark.

Sophomore Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) logged all the minutes in goal for the Generals, notching four saves.

Matt Beckwith and Jimmy Pollard combined to post 10 saves for Eastern Mennonite (4-8, 2-4).

Senior midfielder Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) scored at the 61:18 mark to give the Generals a 1-0 lead.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER FALLS AT ROANOKE, 2-1 (10/4)

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke used two late second half goals to hand Washington and Lee its first loss of the season, 2-1, in ODAC men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

Regi Francois scored on a shot that was deflected by a Washington and Lee defender and snuck past sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) at the 84:34 mark. Ryan Pflugrad then scored 12 minutes later to give the Roanoke (10-0, 5-0 ODAC) a 2-0 lead.

Washington and Lee (7-1, 4-1 ODAC) fought back at the 86:05 mark as junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) deflected home a cross from freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) to close the gap to 2-1. The Generals, however, could not beat goalkeeper Chris Ebeling in the closing minutes.

W&L will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Generals will host Guilford in Lexington. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS LYNCHBURG, 5-1 (9/30)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee moved to 7-0 for the first time in school history with a 5-1 victory over Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon in ODAC men's soccer action.

The win also set a school record for consecutive wins in a season with seven.

W&L (7-0, 4-0 ODAC) was led by sophomore midfielder Garreth Winstead (Albuquerque, N.M./St Pius X), who scored his first two collegiate goals. Senior forward Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) also notched a goal and an assist, while freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) and sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J/Christian Brothers Academy) also found the net for Washington and Lee.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded his second consecutive win by stopping two shots.

The Generals outshot Lynchburg, 19-5.

W&L will travel to Roanoke, Va., on Wednesday to take on Roanoke in a battle of the only remaining undefeated teams in the ODAC. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT, 4-0 (9/28)

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior forward Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) scored two first half goals as Washington and Lee tied a school record with six consecutive victories by defeating Hampden-Sydney, 4-0 in ODAC men's soccer action on Thursday afternoon.

The win marked the fourth time in W&L history that a team won six consecutive games and the first time since 1989. It also marked only the second time in school history that the Generals started off the season with six straight victories. The previous year was 1964 when the Generals finished 7-2-1.

Crawford's first tally came three minutes into the game to give Washington and Lee (6-0, 3-0 ODAC) a 1-0 lead. He then scored at the 24:38 mark off a feed from junior midfielder Rick Schnatz (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) to make the score 2-0 at the half.

Schnatz notched his first goal of the season in the 80th minute to add to the lead. Sophomore defender Sean Hardin (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster Schools) rounded out the scoring at the 82:58 mark off an assist from freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood).

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded his third victory of the season by stopping all four shots that he faced. Hampden-Sydney (6-4, 2-1 ODAC) outshot the Generals, 12-11.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS VA. WESLEYAN, 2-1 (9/23)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee used two second half goals to defeat Virginia Wesleyan for the first time since 1989, 2-1 in ODAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The win gave the Generals their first 5-0 start since 1964, when they finished 7-2-1.

Senior forward Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) deflected home his first collegiate goal off a cross from sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) at the 54:22 mark to give W&L a 1-0 lead.

Freshman midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) notched his first collegiate goal at the 71:06 mark off a pass from junior midfielder David Kodack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) to give the Generals a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore midfielder Josh Nolz (Onancock, Va./Nandua) cut the lead in half over eight minutes later, but the Blue Marlins could not find the net again in the final ten minutes.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) picked up his second victory of the season for the Generals.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee used two first half goals to cruise to a 3-0 non-conference victory over Ferrum on Wednesday afternoon in men's soccer.

Senior captain Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) scored at the 15:46 mark off an assist from junior midfielder David Kodack (Branchburg, N.J/Somerville) to give the Generals a 1-0 lead.

Junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) took a feed from freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) and notched his sixth goal of the season at the 23:23 mark to push the lead to 2-0.

Sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) stole the ball from goalkeeper Rod Baker (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and fired home the final goal for W&L in the 81st minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C/Broughton) collected his second straight shutout for Washington and Lee by posting one save. W&L outshot the Panthers 20-2.

Grimes then found the net at the 61:31 mark again with a header off a pass from freshman forward Bret Grote (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). Grimes now leads the Generals with five goals on the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) recorded his first victory by stopping all six shots he faced.

W&L outshot Randolph-Macon 10-8.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER WINS THRILLER (9/14)

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Washington and Lee University senior midfielder Ryan Nelson (Bel Air, Md./C.Milton Wright) scored with 1:09 remaining to give the Generals a 3-2 win over Southern Virginia in men's soccer action on Thursday.

Nelson took a feed from junior midfielder Rick Schnatz (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) and fired a long range shot into the upper right corner for the victory. Schnatz notched two assists on the day.

Junior midfielder Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) got the Generals on the board at the 9:28 mark, assisted by senior forward Andy Crawford (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy). Grimes then gave the Generals a 2-0 lead with a header at the 22:22 mark off a cross from Schnatz.

Southern Virginia fought back with two early second half goals. Ryan Lenahan scored at the 49:00 mark, and Ben Lingen scored off a free kick nine minutes later.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Broughton) picked up his second straight win for W&L. He made two saves in the net. W&L outshot the Knights, 19-5.

The Generals return home Saturday as they host Randolph-Macon in ODAC play at 1:30 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER SECURES FIRST WIN (9/9)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee opened its men's soccer season with a 2-1 victory in double-overtime against the Cardinals of Catholic.

The Generals (1-0) fell behind early in the second half on a goal by Pat Heenan in the 63rd minute. W&L then responded with a goal by junior Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) off a loose ball just under 10 minutes later. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first overtime. However, at the 4:34 mark of the second overtime, W&L sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) took a feed from senior Ryan Nelson (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and scored his first collegiate goal and the game-winner.

W&L outshot Catholic seven to four. Sophomore goaltender Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) took the win for the Generals after relieving senior Jordan Ginsberg (Jackson, Mich./Jackson) in overtime. Foley stopped both shots he faced in overtime.

The Generals will travel to Buena Vista, Va., on Thursday, September 14 to take on Southern Virginia College at 4:00 pm.
