W&L ENDS SEASON WITH 4-3 DOUBLE OVERTIME LOSS TO ROANOKE (11/3)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The No. 4 seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team ended its season with a heartbreaking 4-3 double-overtime loss to the Maroons of Roanoke College in the first round of the ODAC men's soccer tournament on Wednesday in Lexington, Va.

Roanoke (8-8-2), seeded fifth, jumped ahead early on a penalty kick goal by Adam Birch just 1:20 into the match. The Maroons extended their lead to 2-0 when Ryan Pflugrad scored on a 10-yard shot at the 8:47 mark. W&L then caught fire, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead. Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) scored first for the Generals off an assist from sophomore midfielder Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) at the 26:26 mark. Senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) scored the next two goals for W&L, the first coming on a penalty kick with 12:45 left in the half. The next goal came only 2:22 later off a pass from Wilson. The lead proved to be short lived as Regi Francois tied the game at the 40:23 mark, beating W&L freshman goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep).

Neither team was able to score again until Andy Newton corraled a deflected ball in front of the W&L net and tallied the game-winner with 8:13 left in the second overtime.

With the win, Roanoke advances to meet No. 8 seeded Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC Semifinals on Friday at Hampden-Sydney. W&L ends its season with an overall record of 9-8.

W&L LOSES TO SALISBURY STATE, 1-0 (10/30)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team lost to the Seagulls of Salisbury State by a count of 1-0 in its regular season finale on Saturday in Lexington, Va.

Joe Iskow scored the only goal of the match on a shot from about 20 yards out at the 38:34 mark of the first half. Both teams had numerous chances to score, but neither could capitalize from that point on. Freshman goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) made six saves in goal to keep the Generals in the contest. Salisbury State goalkeeper Michael Svehla stopped four W&L shots on his way to the shutout. For the match, the Seagulls outshot W&L 11-10.

W&L will compete in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 2. The location and time have not been determined.

W&L BEATS BRIDGEWATER, 4-2, IN MEN'S SOCCER (10/27)

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Sophomore forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) scored two goals to help Washington and Lee to a 4-2 victory over Bridgewater in ODAC men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

Grimes tallied the game's first goal off an assist from junior back Jacek Mucha (Houston, Texas/AWTY International) at the 11:13 mark. However, Bridgewater would fight back to take a 2-1 lead as Mike Colavito scored goals at the 18:50 and 27:53 marks. Colavito's first goal came via an assist from Eric Powell and the second was off an assist from Nick Forster.

W&L then tied the score at 2-2 as senior midfielder Jason Miller (Boone, N.C./Watauga) tallied an unassisted goal at the 30:37 mark.

After the half, W&L assumed control of the match as senior back Matt Arnold (Ware Neck, Va./Gloucester) scored off an assist from senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) with 68:00 gone-by. Grimes scored an unassisted goal with 33 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Junior Jordan Ginsberg (Jackson, Mich./Jackson) made three saves in goal for the Generals (9-6, 6-3). Jon McClure registered six saves in goal for the Eagles (0-13-2, 0-7-1).

W&L outshot Bridgewater, 13-9, and took six corner kicks as opposed to two for the Eagles.

W&L will return to action again on Saturday when it hosts Salisbury State for non-conference match with the Seagulls. Gametime is set for 11:00 am.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER SHUTS OUT GUILFORD, 1-0 (10/23)

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Washington and Lee triumphed over Guilford College by a score of 1-0 in men's soccer action on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.

Sophomore forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) tallied the game-winning goal off of a cross from senior midfielder Scott LeTourneau (Moorestown, N.C./Providence Day) at the 13:00 mark. W&L freshman goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) made the lead stand by stopping six Guilford scoring attempts for the shutout. Guilford goalkeeper John Watson made nine saves to keep his team within striking distance. With the win, the Generals improve to 8-6 overall on the season, 5-3 in the ODAC. The Quakers drop to 7-8 overall, 4-5 in the ODAC.

W&L will play its next match on October 27, at Bridgewater College. The match is set for 3:00 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS FERRUM, 5-1 (10/21)

FERRUM, Va. -- Washington and Lee outshot Ferrum College by a count of 13-10 en route to a 5-1 victory in men's soccer action on Thursday in Ferrum, Va.

Senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) tallied two goals for the Generals (7-6). The other W&L goals were scored by junior midfielder Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads), junior back Jacek Mucha (Houston, Texas/AWTY International), and freshman midfielder Michael Stoeckle (Blacksburg, Va./North Cross). W&L jumped ahead 5-0 before freshman forward Patrick George scored the lone Ferrum goal at the 70:44 mark. Freshman Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), and junior Jordan Ginsberg (Jackson, Mich./Jackson) combined to make seven saves in goal for the Generals.

W&L will play its next match on Saturday, October 23, at Guilford College. Gametime is set for 3:00 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DOWNS LYNCHBURG, 1-0 (10/19)

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Junior back Jacek Mucha (Houston, Texas/AWTY International) scored off a pass from senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) at the 86:14 mark to lead Washington and Lee to a 1-0 victory over Lynchburg in ODAC soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.

Both teams played scoreless to that point due mainly to the play of the goalies. Levi Solmose made eight saves on the afternoon for the Hornets and freshman Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded five saves to preserve his third shutout of the season for W&L.

W&L outshot Lynchburg 13-12 and took six corner kicks as opposed to three for the Hornets.

The loss dropped Lynchburg to 11-6 overall, 4-2 in the ODAC. The Generals improved to 6-6 overall, 4-3 in the ODAC.

W&L will return to action again on Thursday when it travels to Ferrum for non-conference match with the Panthers. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS GOUCHER, 5-0 (10/16)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team shut out the Gophers of Goucher College by a score of 5-0 on Saturday.

W&L (5-6) opened the scoring just 5:29 into the match when junior midfielder Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) fired a shot past Goucher goalkeeper Todd Hack. Senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) increased the lead to 2-0 with a penalty kick goal at the 36:38 mark. Freshman back Paul Negron (Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scored his first career goal with just 4:17 left in the first half, making the score 3-0 in favor of W&L. Parker scored his second goal of the day just 2:57 into the second half on a free kick from about 25 yards out. Freshman midfielder Michael Stoeckle (Blacksburg, Va./North Cross) rounded out the scoring with just :42 left in the match, tallying his first career points in a W&L uniform. Freshmen goalkeepers Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) and Andrew Hirsekorn (Marietta, Ga./Walton) combined on the shutout in goal for the Generals.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER SUFFERS 2-0 LOSS TO EMU (10/14)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 loss to Eastern Mennonite on Thursday in Lexington, Va.

The Royals tallied two goals within an eight minute stretch early in the first half to claim the victory. Sophomore midfielder Jon Moyer (Sellersville, Pa./Christopher Dock) notched the first goal on a shot from about 10 yards out at the 16:05 mark. His goal was set up by freshman back Justin Edris (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central). Junior back Jon Wenger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) scored the insurance goal for the Royals on a header off of a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Bradley Yoder (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite). The second goal was scored with 20:56 remaining in the first half.

For the game, the Royals (5-8, 3-3 ODAC) had seven corner kicks to the Generals' three. Both teams recorded nine shots. Freshman Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and junior Jordan Ginsberg (Jackson, Mich./Jackson) split time in goal for the Generals (4-6, 3-3 ODAC).

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS EMORY & HENRY, 2-1 (10/8)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team recorded its third consecutive ODAC victory on Friday with a 2-1 triumph over Emory & Henry College.

The Generals got on the scoreboard first when senior midfielder Jason Miller (Boone, N.C./Watauga) tallied a goal off an assist from junior back Jacek Mucha (Houston, Texas/AWTY International) just 23:50 into the match. The Wasps (2-11, 0-7) retaliated just 2:02 later, tying the game on a header by Chris Teague. The Generals would not trail for long though, as sophomore forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) drilled a shot past Emory & Henry goalkeeper Josh Hale at the 28:20 mark to give W&L (4-5, 3-2) a 2-1 lead which it would not relinquish.

Freshmen goalies Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) were able to hold the Wasps scoreless for the rest of the match to preserve the win for the Generals.

W&L will return to action on Thursday, October 14, when it hosts the Royals of Eastern Mennonite. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER UPENDS ROANOKE, 5-2 (10/6)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team triumphed over Roanoke College by a count of 5-2 on Wednesday in Lexington,Va.

Sophomore forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) led the Generals (3-5, 2-2 ODAC) with three goals. He opened the scoring just :36 into the game when he slid a shot past Roanoke goalkeeper Brian Zaks. Regi Francois tied the game at the 17:09 mark, beating W&L freshman goalkeeper Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton). Grimes scored again just 6:50 into the second half to put the Generals ahead 2-1. Senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) notched a penalty kick goal before Grimes and freshman back Kevin Bibona (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored the insurance goals for the Generals. Junior midfielder Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) recorded two assists on the game for W&L. The final goal for the Maroons (4-6, 2-3 ODAC) came at the 86:56 mark on a shot by Lee Johnson.

For its next game, W&L will host Emory & Henry on Friday, October 8. Gametime is set for 4:30 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER LOSES 2-0 AGAINST CNU (10/2)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team lost to Christopher Newport University by a score of 2-0 on Saturday in Newport News, Va.

W&L (2-5) battled the Captains to a scoreless first half in which each team attempted seven shots. CNU took control of the game at the onset of the second half scoring both their goals within a seven minute span. Ryan Whinery tallied the first goal for the Captains less than three minutes into the second half. CNU (6-2) notched their final goal at the 54:06 mark on a shot by Shadi Abi-Saab.

For the game, CNU outshot the Generals by a count of 14-8. Freshman Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) recorded four saves in goal for Washington and Lee.

The Generals will host conference rival Roanoke College on Wednesday, October 6. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm on the Liberty Hall Fields.

W&L RALLIES TO UPEND HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, 2-1, IN MEN'S SOCCER (9/30)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team claimed its first ODAC victory of the season on Thursday with an exciting 2-1 win over Hampden-Sydney.

Senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) opened the scoring just 3:46 into the match when he slipped the ball past Hampden-Sydney senior goalkeeper Mike Bizon (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic). The Tigers quickly rallied to tie the score at 1-1 when senior forward Trey Cooper (Va. Beach, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) tallied what proved to be Hampden-Sydney's only goal of the game at the 16:51 mark. Each team had numerous chances, but neither capitalized again until the waning seconds of the match when sophomore midfielder Jon Stroebel (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) notched the game winner for W&L. Stroebel gave the Generals (2-4, 1-2 ODAC) the victory when he knocked in a pass from sophomore forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) with only :17 left on the clock. On the game, W&L outshot the Tigers (5-3, 2-1 ODAC) by a count of 12-9.

For their next game, the Generals will travel to Christopher Newport on Saturday, October 2. Gametime is set for 1:00 pm.

W&L FALLS TO VIRGINIA WESLEYAN IN MEN'S SOCCER (9/25)

NORFOLK, Va. -- Washington and Lee lost its second ODAC match of the year on Saturday by a score of 4-2 to the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College.

Virginia Wesleyan (4-3, 1-1 ODAC) forward Ryan Malloy tallied three goals and an assist for the Marlins. Malloy scored twice in the last 7:28 of the game to break a 2-2 deadlock. The Generals (1-4, 0-2 ODAC) were led by senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) who scored both W&L goals. Parker's first goal came with 22 minutes gone in the match to even the score at 1-1. He later scored with 29:22 remaining to once again knot the score, this time at 2-2.

Freshman goalkeeper Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) recorded four saves for the Generals.

The Generals will look to claim their first ODAC win of the season when they host Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday, September 29. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm.

W&L FALLS TO VMI IN MEN'S SOCCER, 1-0 (9/22)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee played host to neighboring VMI on Wednesday in a men's soccer match on the Liberty Hall Fields. The Keydets (4-2) escaped with a 1-0 victory despite being outshot 13-9 by the Generals (1-3).

VMI scored the only goal of the game with 6:30 left in the first half. Senior midfielder Keane Jones (Locust Grove/South Carroll) capitalized on a loose ball in front of W&L goalkeeper Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) to put the Keydets ahead 1-0. The Generals had numerous opportunities to tie the game, but VMI goalkeeper John Simmons (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) refused to relinquish the lead. Simmons tallied eight saves on the day. Hearn finished with five saves in goal for W&L.

The Generals will seek their first ODAC win of the season when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, September 25. Gametime is set for 1:30 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO RANDOLPH-MACON, 3-1 (9/19)

ASHLAND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team fell to Randolph-Macon, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon in Ashland, Va. The game was originally set to take place on Friday afternoon, but was pushed back due to rain-soaked fields from Hurricane Floyd.

The Generals (1-2, 0-1) assumed a 1-0 lead at the 10:00 mark as sophomore midfielder Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) scored an unassisted goal.

However, the Yellow Jackets would later assume control of the game, scoring goals in the 40th minute, 53rd minute, and 58th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) recorded six saves in goal for the Generals.

W&L will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts neighboring Virginia Military Institute in a 4:30 pm contest.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER TEAM CLAIMS FIRST WIN OF SEASON (9/13)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee outshot Southern Virginia College 24-4 en route to a 3-0 shutout over the Knights for its first win of the season.

W&L (1-1), scored early and often to take control of the match. The first goal was scored by senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y/Pittsford Sutherland) off a cross from sophomore forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) just 10:45 into the match. Sophomore back Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) then followed with a free kick off the post from about 30 yards out only 30 seconds later. With only 14:55 gone in the match, Grimes scored the third and final goal for the Generals off an assist from senior midfielder Jason Miller (Boone, N.C./Watauga). The Knight goalkeepers were forced to make eight saves to keep their team within the three goal margin.

The Generals will travel to Randolph-Macon on Friday, September 19 for their first ODAC match of the young season. Gametime is set for 1:30 pm.

MEN'S SOCCER LOSES AT CATHOLIC (9/11)

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Washington and Lee opened its men's soccer season Saturday with a 2-1 loss against the Cardinals of Catholic University.

The Generals (0-1) fell behind early on a penalty kick goal by Catholic. Catholic (3-1) added another goal early in the second half to up their lead to 2-0. W&L, however, responded with a goal by sophomore Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) off a feed from Jason Miller (Boone, N.C./Watauga). With the score standing at 2-1, the Cardinals shifted into a defensive mode and held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Generals will look for their first win when they return to action Monday, September 13 versus Southern Virginia College at 4:30 PM.
