KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The United Soccer Coaches recently released its 2018 preseason rankings and the Washington and Lee men's soccer team earned a spot in the Top 25 at No. 14.
The Generals concluded the 2017 season with a 15-5-2 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. W&L advanced to the conference championship game before receiving an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Championship where the Generals advanced to the Sweet 16.
Defending National Champion Messiah (24-2) leads the 2018 preseason ranking and is followed by North Park (19-3-2), Chicago (19-2-3), Brandeis (17-5) and Tufts (15-2-4). W&L is joined in the Top 25 by fellow ODAC counterpart Lynchburg (18-2-2) at No. 21.
The Generals return a wealth of experience to the 2018 team, including 2017 First Team All-ODAC performers senior Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian School) and junior Oliver Dolberg (Clovis, Calif./Floyd B. Buchanan), as well as seniors Kevin Lencioni (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) and Viktor Dolberg (Clovis, Calif./Floyd B. Buchanan). Hamryka and Oliver Dolberg led the 2017 team in goals with six and five, respectively, as Viktor Dolberg and Lencioni combined for five goals and three assists.
Among other returning players to the 2018 unit are sophomore Harry Pinkerton (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) and senior Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C./Independence), who both contributed four goals apiece last season. Ritch led the team in assists (six) and points (14).
W&L will look for its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament this fall when it opens the 2018 campaign on Friday, Aug. 31 against Oglethorpe at 4:30 pm on the campus of Emory University as part of the Sonny Carter Invitational. The Generals will then face the hosts on Sep. 1 at 7:00 pm.
