LEXINGTON, Va. – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released its 2017 Division III Academic All-District men's soccer teams on Thursday and Washington and Lee senior goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) was named to the 13-member District 5 team.
A mathematics and physics double-major, Beck garnered the honor for the second time in his career after making 55 saves and posting a .797 save percentage this season for the Generals. A three-time all-conference honoree, Beck ranks fourth in the ODAC with a 0.80 goals-against average and fifth with 14 goals allowed. Beck also earned the 2016 and 2017 ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete awards.
For his career, he has registered a 0.82 goals-against average and 15 shutouts, which both rank in the Top 5 in W&L men's soccer program history. Beck has also tallied 174 career saves for a .798 save percentage.
With Beck's First Team All-District selection, he will now go on the national ballot to be considered for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
The criteria for the CoSIDA All-District program states that a player must be of sophomore academic standing, be a starter or important reserve and claim a GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale. Washington and Lee is a member of District 5, which includes players from small colleges in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Washington and Lee is currently 14-4-1 overall and received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament. W&L will host the first and second rounds of the tournament, and the Generals will take on Mary Washington on Saturday at 1:30 pm at Watt Field.
