AUSTIN, Texas – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released its 2017 Division III Academic All-America men's soccer teams on Tuesday afternoon, and Washington and Lee senior goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) was named to the second team.
Beck is the first men's soccer player in program history to be selected to the Academic All-America team.
A mathematics and physics double-major, Beck started 21 games for the Generals and posted a 0.97 goals-against average, which ranked fifth in the ODAC. The three-time All-ODAC honoree also registered a .783 save percentage, 72 saves and seven shutouts. Beck earned the 2016 and 2017 ODAC/Va. Bureau Scholar-Athlete awards.
For his career, he has registered a 0.88 goals-against average, which ranks second in program history, while his 16 career shutouts are tied for third in program history.
Washington and Lee completed the 2017 season with a 15-5-2 overall record and a 7-2 conference mark. The Generals made their third straight appearance in the NCAA tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000, before falling to fifth-ranked North Park, 3-0.
Beck's selection to the Academic All-America squad brings W&L's all-time total to 73 student-athletes honored since 1975. The criteria for the Academic All-America program states that a player must be of sophomore academic standing, be a starter or important reserve, and claim a GPA of at least a 3.30 on a 4.0 scale.
