W&L Men's Soccer Advances to NCAA Second-Round With 2-0 Win Over Mary Washington

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore defender Oliver Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Buchanan) netted the game-winning goal in the fifth minute to give the Washington and Lee men's soccer team a 2-0 victory over Mary Washington in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.  

Junior midfielder Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga. / Greater Atlanta Christian School) took a corner kick for the Generals (15-4-1) at the 5:30 mark. Senior defender Sterling Kirk (San Francisco, Calif. / Stuart Hall/ Hotchkiss) headed the ball towards the goal off of the corner kick and Dolberg was able to head the ball into the back of the net off of Sterling's header. W&L took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

W&L netted an insurance goal in the 73rd minute when Hamryka took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that UMW (15-5-1) senior goalkeeper Matt Spencer saved. Spencer did not have complete control of the ball and junior midfielder Kevin Lencioni (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) collected the saved shot and fired it into the back of the net to reach the final margin.

For the game, W&L held a 17-12 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played the entire contest for the Generals and made four saves. Spencer also played the full 90 minutes and tallied nine stops for the Eagles.

Washington and Lee will face Oglethorpe in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow at 1:00 pm on Watt Field.
