W&L Men's Soccer Defeats Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – First-year forward Harry Pinkerton (Suwanee, Ga. / North Gwinnett) scored in the 61st minute to lift the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday night at the Trinder Center.

After a scoreless first half, the Generals (9-3-1, 4-2) assumed a 1-0 lead at the 54:55 mark when junior midfielder Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C. / Independence) collected the ball in the center of the box and slipped a shot past VWU (7-7, 2-4) first-year keeper Jamison Auer.

Pinkerton netted the game-winner at the 61:19 mark after he beat a Marlins' defender and fired a shot into the bottom corner of the net. The Generals assumed a 2-0 advantage.

Virginia Wesleyan got on the board in the 85th minute after sophomore midfielder Harrison Weinfeld took a shot from outside the box that went just past the hands of senior keeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg). The Generals held onto the lead for the remainder of the contest to pull off the victory.

For the game, W&L held a 19-9 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks. Beck played all 90 minutes in goal and made three stops for the Generals. Auer also played the full 90 minutes and made four saves for the Marlins.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Emory & Henry at 4:30 pm.
