LEXINGTON, Va. – Bridgewater senior midfielder Renato Grgic scored in the 73rd minute to lift the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over fifth-ranked Washington and Lee in ODAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Eagles (4-6, 1-1) took an early lead in the 15th minute when junior forward Julian Ofori scored off an assist from Grgic. The Generals (6-2-2, 1-1) controlled play in much of the first half outshooting BC, 10-3, however Bridgewater took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the 73rd minute Grgic was fouled by a W&L player in the box and received a penalty kick. Senior keeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) saved the penalty shot, but Grgic scored the game-winner on his rebounded shot to give Bridgewater a 2-0 lead.
The Generals bumped up pressure on the attacking end and it paid off in the 85th minute when junior midfielder Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga. / Greater Atlanta Christian) collected a bouncing ball in the center of the box and scored in the lower corner of the net. W&L could not find an equalizer in the closing minutes of the game and the Eagles walked away with the 2-1 victory.
W&L held a 28-8 advantage in shots and a 15-3 edge in corners. Beck played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Generals and made four saves. Junior Quentin Boric also played the entire contest in goal and made 11 stops for the Eagles.
Bridgewater's win was just the third time the Eagles have defeated W&L in 27 meetings. The last time BC defeated the Generals was a 3-2 double overtime victory during the 2005 season.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Randolph for a 7:00 pm contest.
