LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior defender Austin Kues scored in the 40th minute to help lift the Lynchburg men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over fifth-ranked Washington and Lee in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday night at Shellenberger Field.
Kues collected a rebounded shot by first-year midfielder Michael Zhang just outside the six-yard box at the 40:50 mark and placed it in the upper corner just past senior goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg). Lynchburg (7-1-1) took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Neither team could crack the others' defense in the second half, as the two teams combined to take just three shots. The Generals (6-1-1) had two opportunities to tie the game in the closing minutes, but could not find an equalizer and the Hornets held on for the remainder of the contest to pull off the win.
For the game, Lynchburg held a 13-8 advantage in shots and a slim 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Beck played all 90 minutes for the Generals and made three stops. Junior Dylan McLaurin also played the entire match in goal for LC and collected five saves.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Bridgewater for a 1:00 pm game.
