LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior defender Dylan Stroud tallied the game-winning goal in 71st minute to lead the 14th-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team past Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1, in a non-conference match-up on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Marlins (2-3-1) struck first in the eighth minute. First-year midfielder Andrew Duenke played the ball into the box and found senior forward Tanner Martin, who shot it into the low corner of the net. VWC would keep a 1-0 lead going into the half.
W&L (5-1) came out strong in the second, and had multiple scoring opportunities on set plays. First-year defender Oliver Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Buchannan) evened the score, 1-1, in the 62nd minute, when he headed the ball into the back of the net off of a cross from sophomore midfielder Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C. / Independence).
The score remained knotted, 1-1, until a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Andrew Kim (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) found the head of Stroud, who placed it just past the goalie to give the Generals a 2-1 lead.
Junior goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played all 90 minutes and registered his only save of the game with four minutes remaining in the game, when he made a one-handed save to keep the Marlins from tying the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jay Fox made four saves, while playing all 90 minutes for the Marlins. W&L controlled possession for most of the game, holding a 14-5 shot advantage and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
Washington and Lee returns to action on September 24, when it travels to Shenandoah for a 1:00 pm game.
