W&L Men's Soccer Tops VWC, 4-2, to Advance to ODAC Championship

LEXINGTON, Va. — The top-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team totaled three second-half goals en route to a 4-2 victory over fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday. With the win, the Generals (14-3-2) advanced to the ODAC Championship on Sunday at Watt Field.

The teams were tied, 1-1, at intermission, but the Blue and White grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute. Off a counter attack, first-year midfielder Viktor Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Floyd B. Buchannan) made a forwarding pass to first-year midfielder Dylan Ritch. (Mint Hill, N.C. / Independence). With only the keeper to beat, Ritch struck the ball into the back of the net.

The Generals pushed the lead to 3-1 at the 68:00 mark. After receiving a pass into the box, sophomore forward Reeves Duggan (Birmingham, Ala. / Indian Springs School) dribbled around a couple of Marlin (9-6-3) defenders, and then flicked the ball inside the far post. The third goal of the half came off a header by junior forward Miles Bent (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County). Junior defender Patrick Barry (West Roxbury, Mass./Roxbury Latin School) assisted on the tally. VWC scored in the 81st minute to reach the final margin of 4-2.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) played the full 90 minutes in goal for W&L, making one save. Senior Connor Kirkham (Centreville, Va. / Westfield) stopped two shots over 90 minutes.

Virginia Wesleyan scored the first goal of the game in the 35th minute. First-year forward Ricky Perrault (Portsmouth, Va. / Portsmouth Christian) struck the ball from just inside the box for his seventh goal of the season. The Blue and White evened the contest three minutes later. From the end line, Duggan crossed the ball to a cutting James Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade), and the first-year midfielder headed in the equalizer. 

The Generals will face the winner of a matchup between second-seeded Randolph and third-seeded Roanoke on Sunday in the ODAC Championship at 1:00 pm at Watt Field.
