BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior midfielder Ben Bayles (Fleming Island, Fla. / Fleming Island) scored in the 89th minute to lift the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Bridgewater in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon at the Jopson Field Athletic Complex.
Bayles scored the game-winner off of a penalty kick with 1:48 remaining in the contest, after Bridgewater was whistled for a foul inside the penalty box.
The Generals (3-2-1, 1-0) jumped out to a quick lead when sophomore midfielder Austin Gilbert (Marshfield, Wis. / Marshfield) found the back of the net just 3:26 into the first stanza. The Blue and White took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Senior midfielder Alex Farrington tallied the equalizer for the Eagles (1-3-1, 0-1) when he scored off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Renato Grgic on a breakaway at the 60:20 mark. The game remained tied until Bayles netted W&L's second goal to reach the final margin.
Washington and Lee held a 22-6 advantage in shots and took 14 corner kicks as opposed to Bridgewater's one.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) saw all 90 minutes of action and recorded three saves for the Generals. Junior goalie Mark Davis played the entire contest for the Eagles and made nine saves.
W&L returns to action on September 26 when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan. The match is set to start at 7:00 pm start.
