SEWANEE, Tenn. – First-year midfielder Andrew Kim (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) scored his first collegiate goal in the 57th-minute to lift the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Hendrix at Sewanee on Sunday.
The Generals (2-0) were first on the board at the 15:48 mark when first-year midfielder Sam Knapke (Glen Ellyn, Ill. / Benet Academy) scored his first collegiate goal for a 1-0 lead that W&L took into the halftime break.
The Warriors (0-1-1) responded just 6:06 into the second half when senior defender Joe Esrock scored off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Ryan Stanowski to tie the game at 1-1. However, Kim scored the game-winner unassisted just 5:31 later.
W&L controlled play in the field, holding a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) played all 90 minutes for the Generals, making one save. Hendrix senior Eric Bracy also played the duration in goal, recording four saves.
The game was plagued by cards, with Hendrix receiving two yellow cards and one red card and W&L picking up one yellow card and one red card as well. Senior defender Nick Zaharchuk (Blue Bell, Pa. / Germantown Academy ) and Hendrix sophomore midfielder Spencer Taylor each received a red card in the 81st-minute.
W&L returns to action Saturday, September 6, when it travels to Catholic for a 1:00 pm match.
