Colby Leads W&L Men's Soccer to 3-0 Win Over Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Led by senior Zach Colby's (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) hat trick, the Washington and Lee men's soccer team and first-year head coach Michael Singleton opened the 2014 season with a 3-0 victory at Sewanee on Saturday afternoon at Puett Field. 

Colby's first goal came only 12 minutes into the game off an assist from sophomore midfielder Ted Hurst (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams). Colby's next tally came off a penalty shot, after the Tigers were whistled for a foul in the box at the 17:42 mark.

The Generals took the 2-0 lead into halftime, and Colby extended the game to its final margin, 3-0, in the 69th minute on an unassisted goal. The three scores moved Colby into a tie for sixth on the W&L all-time career goals list. He now has 29 in his career. Jim Fox '74 also finished his career with 29. 

Senior goalkeeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) played 83:41 in the net for the Blue and White, totaling three saves. Senior Conrad Bandoroff took the loss for the Tigers. He allowed all three goals, while making three saves. W&L led in shots, 18-6, and also held the advantage in corner kicks, 10-1. 

Sewanee was issued four cards in the contest. Senior forward Weston Stitt was sent off at 68:52 with a red card, leaving the Tigers down a man for the final 21 minutes of the contest. He received a yellow card five minutes earlier in the match. 

W&L returns to action on Sunday, August 31, when it plays Hendrix at Sewanee. The match is set to start at 3:30 pm.
