LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team snapped its four-game winning streak in ODAC play by drawing a 0-0 tie to Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
In the two periods of overtime, the Generals held the advantage in shot count by a margin of 5-0. Several scoring opportunities arose from these shots, but W&L could not capitalize on the close attempts.
The Generals' best scoring chance in extra time came in the 109th minute, as W&L was awarded a corner kick. Junior midfielder Parker Wolfinger (Greer, S.C./Riverside) sent the kick in front of the net into the feet of sophomore midfielder Max Quellhorst (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), whose attempt flew high.
Both teams showcased tough defenses, as the back third was the determinant in the contest's scoreless outcome.
At the 33:46 mark, LC junior defender Chaz Ashton (Edmond, Okla./Chantilly) attempted a game-changing shot right beneath the crossbar, only to have sophomore goalkeeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) jump high in the net and punch the ball out of bounds.
In the 73rd minute, Civitarese left the box to retrieve a loose ball. Hornets' junior defender Dan Murray (Leesburg, Va./Home School) responded with a shot on target for the open goal. W&L defenders then took control of the box, stepped in the way of the shot and cleared the ball to its offensive third.
With neither team able to notch a score in the 110:00 of play, the score remained at the 0-0 draw.
W&L is now 7-3-1 (4-1-1 ODAC) on the season, while LC is 3-5-4 (2-0-4 ODAC) overall.
In goal for the Blue and White was Civitarese, who registered one save and the shutout. Junior Michael Releford (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) tallied three saves and the shutout, as he played the entire game in net for the Hornets.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Emory & Henry for a 7:00 pm contest.
