W&L Men's Soccer Felled By Ferrum, 2-1

LEXINGTON, Va. – Ferrum used two free kicks in the final seven minutes of action to pull ahead of the Washington and Lee men's soccer team and claim a 2-1 win on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

After being scoreless for the first 83 minutes, Ferrum sophomore midfielder Cristian Turcios (Centreville, Va./Westfield) used a penalty kick in the box to tie up the contest, 1-1. A Generals' red card resulted in the free kick and gave Turcios a chance to blast the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards back.

Less than three minutes later, Turcios was awarded a second free kick after a Generals' foul, which led to the Panthers' second goal. Turcios' attempt bounced off W&L first-year goalkeeper Kieran McQuilkin (New Canaan, Conn./King & Low – Heywood Thomas) into the feet of sophomore midfielder Eddy Funes (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls), who then kicked the ball in over McQuilkin's head from 10 yards back to register the game-winning score.

W&L entered the game aggressively, with the offense needing only one possession to take the lead. Senior forward Dave Phillips (Reistertown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored just 25 seconds into the contest to put W&L up 1-0 early on. After a pass from sophomore forward Zach Colby (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) deflected off Ferrum first-year goalkeeper Justin Robinson (Front Royal, Va./Skyline), Phillips kicked the free ball into the open goal.

The Generals had many scoring opportunities in the second period, but FC's tough defense was able to stifle the Blue and White. The Panthers needed only nine shots in the game to take the win, while W&L knocked off 21 shots.

With the loss, W&L is now 5-3 on the season, while Ferrum improves to 4-4-1 overall.

Kieran spent the entire game in goal for the Generals, recording one save and two goals-against. Robinson tallied five saves and one goal-against while playing 90:00 in net for the Panthers.

W&L returns to the field on Saturday, when it hosts Bridgewater for a 1:30 pm contest.
