HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team topped Hampden-Sydney, 1-0, in ODAC action Saturday afternoon at Miller Field.
In the 68th minute, sophomore midfielder Max Quellhorst (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) used a blocked pass from senior forward Dave Phillips (Reistertown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to tap in the game-winning goal. The W&L defense held off H-SC for the remainder of the contest and claimed the 1-0 win.
With the victory, the Generals improve to 5-2 (2-1 ODAC) on the season, while the Tigers fall to 2-6 (1-2 ODAC) overall.
The Blue and White held an advantage in both shots and corner kicks in the game, notching a 14-11 edge in shots and a 9-2 lead in corner kicks.
In goal for W&L was first-year Kieran McQuilkin (New Canaan, Conn./King & Low – Heywood Thomas), who registered one save and a shutout in his debut in a Generals uniform.
Protecting the net for the Tigers was Blake Carrey, recording five saves and one-goal against in the 90:00 of play.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday, when they host Ferrum for a 4:30 pm contest.
