BETHANY, W.Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team opened its 2012 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Moravian at the Fuzzy Williams Memorial Tourney, hosted by Bethany College, Friday evening.
Just five minutes into the contest, junior midfielder Parker Wolfinger (Greer, S.C./Riverside) knocked in the Generals' first goal of the game after a free ball deflected off of a defender to give the Blue and White a quick 1-0 lead.
W&L was able to take control of the game, keeping much of the possession and notching eight shots in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Zach Colby (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) took advantage of this as he netted the Generals' second tally of the game in the 32nd minute, bringing the score to 2-0 going into halftime.
The second stanza brought more success as Colby recorded his second goal of the game off a Wolfinger pass. W&L was able to hold the Greyhounds scoreless in the final 33:27 and claim its first win in the season opener.
Almost tripling Moravian's shot count for the game, W&L outshot the Greyhounds 14-5 in the contest.
Sophomore Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) spent the entire game in net for the Generals, saving three shots and registering no goals-against.
Protecting the goal for Moravian was senior Mike Brand, who collected five saves and eight goals-against while playing all 90:00 in the contest.
W&L will return to action Saturday, when it faces Bethany in Day 2 of the Fuzzy Williams Memorial Tourney for a 3:00 pm contest.
