LEXINGTON, Va. -- The third-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team fell, 1-0, to No. 6 Lynchburg College in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.
Lynchburg (6-8-4) senior Kyle Symczak (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) broke a scoreless tie in the 56th minute when he found just enough space in the box to take a shot that beat W&L senior Ben Petitto (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis) to his right and put the Hornets up 1-0.
In the game's final minute, W&L (8-5-4) narrowly missed an opportunity to tie the contest and send it into overtime. LC sophomore keeper Michael Releford (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) was caught out of position and W&L sophomore Justin TenBrook (Millville, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) struck a header that appeared headed for the back of the net. However, a Lynchburg defender was able to clear the ball just before it crossed the goal line and preserve the 1-0 Hornet lead.
For the game, W&L held a 10-4 advantage in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks, but Releford made three saves in addition to the team save to record the clean sheet. Petitto made a pair of saves for W&L, which saw a nine-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
With the loss, W&L's 2011 season has now concluded. Lynchburg will move on in the ODAC Tournament and will face the winner of Eastern Mennonite and Bridgewater.
