VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Washington and Lee junior forward Dave Phillips' (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) goal in the 24th minute proved to be the game winner as the men's soccer team held off Virginia Wesleyan for a 1-0 decision on Saturday afternoon at Foster Field.
After a slow start, W&L's second shot of the contest found the net, as Phillips sent a shot to the upper left corner to give the Generals (6-4-1, 3-2-1 ODAC) a 1-0 advantage with 23:01 showing on the clock.
The Marlins (3-8-1, 1-4 ODAC) outshot the Generals 5-4 in the opening stanza, but W&L stood strong, holding on to its 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The two teams continued to battle in the second half, but a 5-4 advantage in shots paired with strong defensive play helped W&L hold on for the 1-0 victory, improving the squad to 6-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.
Shots were even in the match, with both teams recording 10. The Marlins owned the advantage in shots on goal (5-2) and corner kicks (7-1).
In goal, senior Ben Petitto (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis) played all 90:00, finishing with five saves. VWC's Ryan Zmuda also played the entirety, stopping one shot.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm contest.
