LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee sophomore midfielder Justin TenBrook (Millville, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) registered two goals and an assist over a 6:52 span in the first half to help lead the men's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout of Southern Virginia on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
TenBrook started the scoring just 1:56 into the contest, netting his first collegiate goal off an assist by junior midfielder John Stallé to put the Generals (5-4-1) up 1-0. The duo teamed up again just over three minutes later, as Stallé took a corner kick for W&L, finding TenBrook in the box for a 2-0 advantage.
The rapid scoring continued for the Generals, with TenBrook setting up classmate Parker Wolfinger (Greer, S.C./Riverside) off a cross from outside the box with 8:48 showing on the scoreboard, pushing the W&L lead to 3-0. Despite outshooting the Knights 17-1 in the opening stanza, the Generals didn't find the net again the remainder of the half, leaving the score at 3-0 going into the break.
A late goal off a free kick from junior defender Conor Starr (Summit, N.J./The Pingry School) gave W&L the final 4-0 margin in the 78th minute, as the squad improved to 5-4-1 overall with its fourth-consecutive victory.
As a team, the Generals outshot the Knights (4-5-2) by a margin of 29-2, while also owning a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior Ben Petitto (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis) and first-year Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) split time in net, with Petitto earning the win. Both recorded one save. SVU keeper Robbie Key (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) played all 90:00, stopping 12 shots.
