W&L Men's Soccer Earns 2-0 Triumph Over Hampden-Sydney
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team scored a goal in each half as it earned its first ODAC win of the season with a 2-0 triumph over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
Junior Conor Starr (Summit, N.J./The Pingry School) put the Generals (2-4-1, 1-2-1 ODAC) up, 1-0, in the 6th minute after he drew H-SC senior keeper Duncan Oliphant (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) off his line and sent the ball over his head as Oliphant attempted a sliding save.
The Tigers (4-4, 0-2 ODAC) had an opportunity to tie the game in the 19th minute, when W&L senior keeper Ben Petitto (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis) found himself out of position, leaving the net wide open for H-SC junior midfielder Chris Whiteside (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox). However, Whiteside's shot sailed high, leaving the score at 1-0 in favor of the Generals.
W&L saw several additional scoring opportunities to close out the opening stanza, but the score remained 1-0 going into the break.
A quick start to the second half gave W&L the 2-0 lead, when sophomore midfielder Parker Wolfinger (Greer, S.C./Riverside) headed a cross from first-year defender Al Organ (St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle)at the back post in the 49th minute.
Physical play increased as the game continued, and Hampden-Sydney found itself on the short end of key scoring chances late in the contest as W&L held strong, picking up its first ODAC win of the season.
