W&L Men's Soccer Drops Close 2-1 Match to Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. – Roanoke College sophomore midfielder Brian White (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) netted the game-winning goal in the 87th minute as Roanoke College defeated the Washington and Lee men's soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

Roanoke (4-1-1, 1-0-1 ODAC) controlled the tempo during the opening minutes, earning three corner kicks to apply early pressure to the W&L defense. However, each attempt was thwarted by W&L senior keeper Ben Petitto (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis) to keep the game scoreless.

The Generals (1-3-1, 0-1-1 ODAC) picked up the pace midway through the opening stanza, capitalizing on a cross from sophomore midfielder Zach Clarke (Beaumont, Texas/Monsignor Kelly) that found first-year midfielder Max Quellhorst (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) to give W&L a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.

A miscue by sophomore defender Colin Hagenbarth (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) led to RC's only goal of the first half, as Hagenbarth attempted to block a Maroon's shot that in turn deflected off of his leg and into the net to tie the score at 1-1, where it remained going into the break.

Both teams battled in a second half that was filled with physical play, and both squads saw numerous opportunities to take the lead. Roanoke capitalized in the 87th minute, as it was awarded a free kick from just outside the box. Junior defender Chris Conover (Dagsboro, Del./Indian River)collected the free kick, but his shot was saved by Petitto. However, Petitto lost the ball, and White picked up the rebound for the game winner.

W&L increased its intensity in the final minutes, with quality shots from sophomore midfielders Parker Wolfinger (Greer, S.C./Riverside) and Justin TenBrook (Millville, N.J./St. Augustine Prep), but it was not enough as Roanoke held on for the 2-1 victory.

As a team, the Generals outshot the Maroons, 13-10, for the contest, but trailed, 7-1, in corner kicks.

Petitto played all 90:00 in net, recording three saves. RC keeper Avery Makel (Nellysford, Va./Nelson County) also played the entirety, stopping four shots.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday, as they host Eastern Mennonite at 4:00 pm.
