ASHLAND, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team opened ODAC action with a 0-0 tie at Randolph-Macon on Wednesday afternoon in Ashland.
After a competitive first half from both squads, the Generals (1-2-1) came out strong in the second half, outshoting Randolph-Macon (1-2-1) by a margin of 14-6. Despite doubling the Yellow Jackets' shot total W&L was unable to capitalize, sending the contest into overtime.
The first extra session saw an attack from the Yellow Jackets challenge the Generals defense, outshooting W&L 3-0. However, the Generals returned the favor in the second overtime, as they held a 3-1 edge in shots.
R-MC had an opportunity to win the game in the final minutes of the second overtime session, as they were awarded a penalty shot off a handball call from outside the box. The shot was initially deflected, and the second shot sailed high to end the contest.
For the game, the Generals outshot the Yellow Jackets, 22-13, while R-MC owned a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
In net, senior Ben Petitto (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis Catholic) played all 110:00, recording seven saves. R-MC keeper Matty Rocawich also played the entirety stopping nine shots.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they host Roanoke College at Watt Field. The match is slated to start at 1:00 pm.
