LANCASTER, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team fell behind early, dropping a 4-1 decision to DeSales on Sunday morning in its final contest of the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic.
DeSales (2-1-1) grabbed a 2-0 lead off of consecutive goals by Derek Long and Sky Rimmele at the 15:05 and 28:05 marks, respectively.
W&L (1-2) cut the lead in half in the 36th minute, as sophomore defender Colin Hagenbarth (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) redirected a pass from classmate Parker Wolfinger (Greer, S.C./Riverside) to leave the score at 2-1 in favor of the Bulldogs. However, DeSales pushed its lead back to two goals (3-1) off a tally from Matt Murphy, a lead it took into the break.
In the second half, the Generals outshot the Bulldogs, 6-5, but still fell short as DeSales added a goal in the 61st minute for the final 4-1 margin.
For the contest, W&L held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks, but trailed the Bulldogs, 14-11, in shots.
In net, sophomore Robert Gerbo (Morgantown, W.Va./University) and first-year Albert Civitorese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) split time. Gerbo took the loss after playing the first half, allowing three goals while recording three saves. Civitarese took to the field in the second half, allowing one goal and stopping one shot.
DeSales keeper Mike Thompson played all 90:00, recording five saves.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, as they open ODAC play with a 4:30 pm contest at Randolph-Macon.
