ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie in double-overtime against Elizabethtown College in its season opener on Friday evening as a part of the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic.
The Blue Jays (1-0-2) struck first when sophomore forward Javeim Blanchette found the back of the net in the 10th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Erik Weber. Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead into the half, but the Generals (0-0-1) responded when sophomore midfielder John Stallé (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) recorded the game-tying goal in the 58th minute. Neither team was able to find the net in the final minutes of regulation and two overtime sessions to result in the 1-1 finish.
Elizabethtown led W&L in both shots, 12-8, and corner kicks, 8-3, for the game.
Junior goalie Alex Lambert (Massapequa Park, N.Y/Chaminade) played all 110:00 in net for the Generals, recording two saves. Junior netminder Andy Barnes also played the duration for Elizabethtown, notching four saves.
The Generals return to action tomorrow for their second game of the Blue Jay Classic against The College of New Jersey. Gametime is slated for 5:30 pm.
