ODAC Releases Men's Soccer Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released its 2010 men’s soccer preseason poll on Thursday afternoon and Washington and Lee was picked to finish fifth in the voting.

In one of the closest surveys in recent history, Hampden-Sydney College and Lynchburg College each collected four first place votes in the poll.  Only 11 points separate the top four teams with H-SC topping the list with 110 points.  LC garnered 106 tallies, followed by Roanoke College with 103 points to go along with a pair of first place votes.  Virginia Wesleyan College picked up the remaining top nod on its way to 99 points. The Generals claimed the fifth spot with 62 points, followed by Eastern Mennonite (59), Randolph (58), Guilford (53), Randolph-Macon (38), Bridgewater (22) and Emory & Henry (16).

The Generals return seven seniors from last year’s squad that finished 5-7-4 (3-6-2 ODAC) before falling to Hampden-Sydney, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament.

Four of W&L’s top scorers from last season will return, losing only Drew Crowley to graduation. Returnees on the offensive side include senior midfielder/forward James Pymm (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony’s), who led the team in scoring with 15 points off of seven goals and one assist. He is joined by junior midfielder James Paldino (Kensington, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford), sophomore forward Dave Phillips (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and senior midfielder Ben Belair (McLean, Va./Langley), who combined for 15 points (6g, 3a) last season. 

On the defensive end, senior defender Greg Jackson (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic), junior defender Connor Pierce (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and sophomore midfielder/defender Conor Starr (Summit, N.J./The Pingry School) will look to anchor a defense that allowed an average of 1.25 goals per game last season.

The Generals will open the 2010 season at the Blue Jay Classic on Sept. 10 at 7:30 pm against host Elizabethtown College.
