W&L Men's Soccer Holds Off Guilford, 4-3

83:42 mark to help the Washington and Lee men’s soccer team
to a 4-3 victory over Guilford on Tuesday afternoon at Watt
The Generals (3-2-2, 1-1-1 ODAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first half with a trio of goals in the opening 16 minutes of the game. Sophomore midfielder James Paldino (Kensington, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) scored one goal and assisted on two others, while junior forward James Pymm (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) opened the scoring just 3:41 into the contest and assisted on a Phillips goal at the 16:00 mark as W&L carried a 3-0 advantage into the break.
The Generals kept Guilford (7-4-1, 2-1 ODAC) scoreless until late in the second half when a three-goal rally in a span of 10:25 knotted the game at 3-3 in the 81st minute. The Quakers received goals from first-year forward Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C./Williams) off a helper from fellow first-year forward Ronnie Castellanos (Lexington, N.C./N. Forsyth) in the 71st minute and then Castellanos in the 73rd minute. GC then tied the game at 3-3 off a penalty kick taken by sophomore Jordan Alexander (Mandeville, La./Covington) in the 80th minute, setting up Phillips’ game-winner in the 84th minute.
Junior goalie Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) played all 90:00 in net for the Generals, allowing three goals and recording three saves. Guilford goalie Jonathan Shine would also play the duration, allowing four goals while recording no saves.
The Generals return to action Saturday as they travel to Randolph for a 7:00 pm match.
