W&L MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO LYNCHBURG, 10-6, IN ODAC SEMIS

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Third-seeded Lynchburg scored four goals in the first and third quarters en route to a 10-6 win over second-seeded Washington and Lee in the ODAC men's lacrosse tournament semifinals on Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Hornets (11-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter, but the Generals fought back with five straight goals for a 5-4 lead with 5:11 left in the second period. Senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) got the rally started with a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) with 12:26 remaining in the second period. Murray then scored unassisted with 10:39 left in the period and assisted on a goal by freshman attackman Will Englehart (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) with 6:33 remaining. Ryan capped the rally with a man-up goal at the 5:11 mark.

Lynchburg knotted the game at 5-5 on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Ryan Quick (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) with 3:05 left in the half. Quick's goal proved to be the first in a five-goal run by the Hornets, which gave them a 9-5 lead with 5:39 remaining in the third period. W&L sliced the lead to 9-6 as Ryan assisted on a goal by sophomore midfielder Matt Arcati (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) with 6:22 left, but LC senior attackman Billy McCulloch (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson) capped the scoring with 4:40 remaining.

Murray led the Generals with two goals and one assist, while Ryan notched one goal and two assists. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) notched seven saves in goal.

Freshman attackman Ryan Cranston (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), Billy McCulloch and sophomore attackman Brian McCulloch (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson) led the Hornets with two goals and one assist each. Junior midfielder Brian Kemper (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) added one goal and two assists, while freshman Garrett Curran (Hull, Mass./Tabor Academy) registered 12 saves in goal.

With the loss, Washington and Lee's season ends at 9-5 overall. Lynchburg will move on to face top-seeded Roanoke in the ODAC Championship game on Sunday.

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, 10-5

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The 15th-ranked Hampden-Sydney men's lacrosse team scored four second quarter goals en route to a 10-5 win over 10th-ranked Washington and Lee in the ODAC regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon in Hampden-Sydney, Va.

The game was knotted at 2-2 early in the second period, before the Tigers (8-4, 4-2) struck with two goals by Ryan Harrington and two more tallies by Vince Smith for a 6-2 haltime advantage. Following the break, Hampden-Sydney scored man-up with 8:37 remaining in the third period for a 7-2 lead and, following a tally by W&L senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) just 13 seconds later, the Tigers would go on a three-goal run for a 10-3 lead in posting the victory.

W&L (9-4, 4-2) was led by Murray, who scored two goals, and senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport), who added one goal and one assist. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) posted eight saves in goal.

Smith and Michael Via posted two goals and two assists each for the Tigers, while Harrington notched three goals. Jeremy Bull played a majority of the minutes in goal, recording six saves.

Washington and Lee will be the second seed for the ODAC Tournament and will host third-seeded Lynchburg on Tuesday afternoon. The game time has yet to be determined.

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE BREAKS OUT; DEFEATS GUILFORD 23-6

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team broke out on the offensive end of the field with 13 different players finding the net in a 23-6 victory over Guilford in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (9-3, 4-1) built a 7-2 halftime advantage and never looked back in scoring their most goals since a 24-1 win over the Quakers during the 2001 season.

Senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) led the way with one goal and five assists, while senior attackman John Hyland (Garden City, N.Y./Hotchkiss) and freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) each tallied four goals and one assist. Sophomore attackman Grant Martin (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) notched three goals, and sophomore midfielder Jeff Fuge (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and freshman attackman Will Englehart (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) added two goals apiece. Sophomore goalie Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) played the first half in goal, making seven saves, while senior Pat Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) played the final 30 minutes, posting three saves.

Guilford (4-8, 1-5) was paced by senior attackman Matt Wagner's (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic) four goals and freshman attackman Todd Bochenek's (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) one goal and three assists. Freshman Andrew Vigne (Concord, Mass./Middlesex) played the initial 53:03 in goal, recording 16 saves.

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE DEFEATS VIRGINIA WESLEYAN, 8-4

NORFOLK, Va. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team scored four goals in the fourth quarter, including three in a span of 2:39, en route to an 8-4 victory over ODAC-foe Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.

The Marlins (2-10, 0-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on a pair of unassisted goals by junior attacker Dan Hofmeister. The Generals (8-3, 3-1) responded by scoring three straight goals in the second period to take a 3-2 lead into halftime. Sophomore midfielder Matt Arcati (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) notched a goal and an assist, while freshman attacker Will Englehart (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) tallied his first collegiate goal during the run.

Virginia Wesleyan tied the score at 3-3 at the 8:49 mark of the third period when Hofmeister scored his third goal of the day off an assist from senior midfielder Brendan Rooney. The two teams each scored another goal to make the score 4-4 heading into the fourth period.

Sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) scored off a feed from senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) to give W&L a 5-4 lead at the 10:43 mark of the fourth quarter that it wouldn't relinquish.

Ryan finished with two goals and an assist, while Englehart notched two goals. Arcati added a goal and two assists and sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) made 15 saves in goal.

Hofmeister led the Marlins with three goals and sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Sothoron stopped 11 shots.

The Generals return to the field on Wednesday when they host Guilford at 3:30 pm.

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE SEES STREAK END, FALLS TO VMI, 12-4

LEXINGTON, Va. -- VMI snapped a string of 16 consecutive losses to Washington and Lee with a 12-4 win over the Generals on Wednesday afternoon in the 18th-annual Lee Jackson Lacrosse Classic held at VMI's Alumni Field.

The Keydets (5-5) had last won the event during the 1988 season and faced a 1-0 deficit just 1:19 into the game as W&L junior midfielder Perrin Monroe (Washington, D.C./Phillips Exeter) scored unassisted. However, VMI bounced back with three straight goals for a 3-1 lead with 13:53 remaining in the second period. W&L senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored off an assist from senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) with 9:34 remaining in the half to cut the score to 3-2, but the Keydets closed the half with another three-goal run for a 6-2 lead at the break.

VMI added two more goals in the third period for an 8-2 lead, before W&L senior defenseman Eric Koch (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored unassisted at the 11:44 mark of the fourth period to make the score 8-3. Any momentum from the goal was short lived, however, as VMI's Will Collier scooped up a ground ball in front of the goal and fired it home just 1:23 later.

Murray led W&L with one goal and one assist, while Koch was named the W&L recipient of the Worrell-Fallon Award, presented to the game MVP from each team. Koch picked up three ground balls in addition to tallying one goal. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) played a majority of the time in goal, recording six saves.

Tony Cavalero was named the VMI recipient of the Worrell-Fallon Award after scoring two goals and winning 9-of-13 faceoffs. Collier led the Keydets with three goals and one assist. Robert Trimble notched three goals, while Kevin Hill and Gabe McCaig each notched one goal and two assists. Dan Frank played a majority of the game in goal for VMI, posting 10 saves.

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO ROANOKE, 10-1

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke junior goalie Matt Madalon made 18 saves, including 10 in the first quarter, to lift the fifth-ranked Maroons to a 10-1 win over 10th-ranked Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

W&L (7-2, 2-1) outshot Roanoke 15-7 in the first period, but trailed 2-1 after the period thanks to Madalon's play in goal. The two teams played even in the first half, until Roanoke assumed control with a three-goal spurt in the final 2:48 of the second quarter. Junior midfielder Chris Keating led the charge with one goal and one assist during the stretch.

Leading 5-1 late in the third period, Roanoke (8-1, 3-0) began pulling away with a pair of goals in the final 3:44 of the third period and tacked on three more goals in the fourth stanza for the nine-goal victory.

Sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) scored the lone Generals' goal off an assist from senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) with 6:06 remaining in the first period. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) played the first 49:32 in goal, recording 10 saves. Senior Pat Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) played the final 10:28 in goal, posting one save.

Keating, sophomore attackman Jon Mason, senior attackman Tug Schroeder and senior midfielder Dan Reed each had two goals and one assist to lead the Maroons.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Matt Arcati (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) posted four assists and senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) notched three goals to lead 10th-ranked Washington and Lee to an 8-4 win over Randolph-Macon in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Yellow Jackets (5-4, 1-1) opened the scoring with 5:15 left in the first quarter as junior midfielder P.C. Johnsen (Laurel, Md./Hammond) found the net unassisted. W&L (7-1, 2-0) responded with a goal by sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) off an assist by senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) with 47 seconds left in the quarter, and took the lead on a goal by Murray off a feed from Arcati with 11:53 left in the second quarter. The Generals then stretched their lead to 3-1 with 7:15 left in the half on a feed from Arcati to freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate).

Macon also opened the scoring in the second half as freshman attackman Paul Johnsen (Laurel, Md./Glenelg) found rope off an assist from freshman midfielder Jim Dress (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) at the 10:55 mark of the third period, but the Generals would go on to score the next two goals to assume a 5-2 lead with 7:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets closed to within 5-3 with 2:31 left in the period on a man-up goal by Paul Johnsen off a feed from junior midfielder Brendan Toone (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy), but the Generals would score the game's next three tallies, two by Murray, for a commanding 8-3 lead with 8:43 remaining. R-MC ended the scoring on an unassisted goal by P.C. Johnsen off the ensuing faceoff.

Molinelli complemented Arcati and Murray for W&L by totaling one goal and a pair of assists, while Rider posted two scores. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) was again solid in goal, recording 16 saves in the victory.

Randolph-Macon was paced by P.C. Johnsen's two goals. Paul Johnsen and Dress each registered one goal and one assist. Sophomore Brian Vierheller (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) also played well in goal for the Yellow Jackets, recording 20 saves.

The Generals (6-1, 1-0) led 2-1 at halftime on a pair of goals by senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport), but the Hornets scored two straight goals to assume a 3-2 lead with 4:03 remaining in the third period. Freshman attackman Johnny Black (Timonium, Md./St. Paul's) scored off an assist from senior attackman Billy McCulloch (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson) at the 6:21 mark of the period, followed by an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Scott McAlee (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock).

W&L answered with an unassisted tally by senior midfielder Mike Baracco (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) with 43 seconds left in the third period to tie the game at 3-3. The Generals then took a 4-3 lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) off a feed from freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) with 7:46 remaining in the fourth period. The Hornets (5-2, 0-1) knotted the game at 4-4 on a goal by McAlee off an assist from McCulloch with 3:36 left, but Arcati notched the game-winner to give W&L its sixth one-goal win of the season.

Both goalies were stellar in net, with W&L sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) totaling 14 saves and Lynchburg freshman Garrett Curran (Hull, Mass./Tabor Academy) notching 12 stops.

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO MARY WASHINGTON, 9-6

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The University of Mary Washington scored six consecutive goals over the second and third periods en route to a 9-6 victory over fifth-ranked Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Generals (5-1) jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the 7:05 mark of the second period. Senior midfielder Pat Collins (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) scored two goals, while senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) notched a goal and an assist during the spurt.

The Eagles (4-2) responded with two goals to tie the score at 3-3 heading into halftime and then scored four straight goals in the third period, including three in a span of 1:19, to take a 7-3 after three periods. Sophomore midfielder Matt Morrell tallied two goals and junior attackman Dave Morris added a goal and an assist during the run.

W&L pulled to within 7-5 at the 11:10 mark of the fourth period on goals by sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) and freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate), but Mary Washington scored the next two goals to push their lead back to 9-5 with just 2:14 left in the game.

Collins and Ryan each finished with a pair of goals for the Generals, while senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) notched two assists. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) made six saves in goal.

Morrell and senior attackman Mark Fiore each tallied two goals for the Eagles. Freshman Brad Buck stopped 12 shots in net.

The Generals return to the field on Saturday when they host Lynchburg at 1:30 pm.

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE DOWNS GREENSBORO, 11-10

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The fifth-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team was whistled for 11 penalties totaling nine minutes, but escaped with its fifth-straight one goal victory in an 11-10 win over Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (5-0) opened the game with a 5-1 lead on the strength of two goals and an assist by senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport). The Pride (4-1) stormed back by scoring four of the next five goals, three man-up, to cut the Generals lead to 6-5 entering the half.

W&L sandwiched a pair of goals around a single Greensboro tally for an 8-6 lead with 7:36 remaining in the third period, but the Pride clawed back with three straight goals for a 9-8 lead with 8:52 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Generals tied the game just 12 seconds later on a goal by senior midfielder Adam Chesbrough (Haverford, Pa./Harriton) off an assist from freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate), and stretched to an 11-9 lead with 4:37 remaining on goals by Molinelli and sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy). The Pride provided the final margin on an unassisted tally by freshman attackman Jordan Kenney (Linthicum, Md./Mt. Saint Joseph) with two seconds remaining in the game.

W&L was led by Molinelli, who totaled four goals and three assists. Rider notched two goals and an assist, while senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) added one goal and one assist. Chesbrough won 20-of-24 faceoffs in the game, while sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) posted seven saves in goal.

Greensboro, who was 7-of-11 on man-up situations, was led by Kenney's three goals and two assists. Freshman attackman Dustin Harlowe (Charlotte Hall, Md./St Mary's Ryken) chipped in with two goals and an assist. Junior Corey Reina (Baltimore, Md./Mt. Saint Joseph) registered 10 saves in goal.

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE DEFEATS F&M, 7-6, IN OVERTIME

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) scored off an assist from senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) with 1:49 remaining in overtime to lift fourth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 7-6 win over Franklin & Marshall in men's lacrosse action on Saturday evening at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (4-0) extended a 2-1 halftime advantage with goals by sophomore attackman Grant Martin (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) and sophomore defenseman Peter Goodwin (Darien, Conn./Darien) coming just 32 seconds apart. The Diplomats (2-1) responded with an unassisted tally by senior midfielder Colin Hanley (Davidsonville, Md./DeMatha) at the 11:52 mark of the third period, but W&L went up 5-2 with 9:55 remaining on another goal by Martin.

F&M began the fourth quarter by scoring three straight goals to tie the game at 5-5 with 9:50 remaining, but the Generals again took the lead on a man-up goal by sophomore midfielder Matt Arcati (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) off an assist from Molinelli with 7:52 remaining. The Generals held the lead until 37 seconds remained in regulation when freshman attackman Noah Wilkinsky (Ardmore, Pa./Valley Forge Military) found the net off an assist from senior attackman Steve Welsh (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen). The Generals were whistled for a foul shortly thereafter and the Diplomats began the extra session with a man-up opportunity. W&L sophomore goalkeeper Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) posted one save in the overtime period and Murray scored the game-winner off the Generals' final clear.

Molinelli led W&L with four assists, while Martin notched two goals. Lalli posted 11 saves in goal.
F&M was paced by Hanley's two goals. Welsh added one goal and one assist, while senior Mike Sartorius (Summit, N.J./Summit) notched nine saves in net.

W&L MEN'S LACROSSE DEFEATS ELIZABETHTOWN, 7-6, IN OVERTIME

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior midfielder Pat Collins (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) scored off an assist by senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) with 0.8 seconds remaining in overtime to lift fourth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 7-6 win over Elizabethtown in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Blue Jays (0-3) took a 6-5 lead with 2:17 remaining in regulation on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Justin Griffey (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen). However, W&L tied the game at 6-6 just 22 seconds later as Molinelli found the net off an assist by freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate). Neither team could find the net again in regulation, setting up Collins' game-winner in overtime.

Elizabethtown opened a 4-2 lead with 6:18 remaining in the third period on a goal by Griffey off an assist by senior attackman Allen Churchman (Aston, Pa./Garnet Valley). The Generals then responded with three straight goals by Molinelli to end the third period with a 5-4 lead. A goal by sophomore midfielder Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) with 14:25 left in the fourth quarter and Griffey's late goal preceeded the Generals' late run.

Molinelli led W&L (3-0) with a career-high four goals and one assist, while Rider had one goal and one assist. Senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) added a pair of assists. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) stopped seven shots in goal.

Griffey, Puzzangara and senior attackman Matt Newell (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) each had two goals for the Blue Jays. Churchman had two assists, while senior Fran McKeever (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) notched 11 saves in goal.

MURRAY LEADS W&L MEN'S LACROSSE PAST GETTYSBURG, 9-8

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) scored a career-high four goals and assisted on another to lead eighth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 9-8 win over sixth-ranked Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

Murray notched two goals and an assist during a 4-1 Generals' run to open the game. W&L held a 5-2 lead in the second quarter, before the Bullets (0-1) went on a three-goal run to tie the game at 5-5 at the half. Junior attackman Chase Stewart (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) scored a pair of goals during the run, while senior midfielder Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, Md./Bullis) scored the equalizer with just 24 seconds remaining in the second period.

W&L (2-0) and Gettysburg traded goals to start the third period, before the Generals went on a three-goal run to assume a 9-6 lead entering the fourth period. Murray capped the run on a goal with eight seconds remaining in the quarter off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy). The Bullets pulled to within 9-8 on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder T.J. Liberto (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) with 4:55 left in the game, but W&L held on for its second-straight one-goal win over a Top 10 opponent.

Murray's effort was supplemented by senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport), who tallied one goal and one assist. Junior midfielder Perrin Monroe (Washington, D.C./Phillips Exeter) added a pair of assists, while sophomore goalie Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) was again spectacular in goal, recording 15 saves.

Gettysburg was led by Stewart, who totaled three goals. Junior attackman Evan Gallant (Lutherville, Md./Loyola), junior midfielder Chris Renzi (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Sowanick each amassed one goal and one assist. Sophomore Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola) stopped five shots in goal.

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Washington and Lee sophomore goalie Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) recorded 20 saves in leading the eighth-ranked Generals to a 7-6 win over fifth-ranked Washington College in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Chestertown, Md.

W&L (1-0) jumped out to a 6-2 halftime lead on the strength of two goals and two assists from freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate) and a goal and an assist from senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport).

The Shoremen (0-1) scored a pair of goals in the third period to climb to within 6-4 heading into the fourth period, but W&L senior midfielder Pat Collins (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) scored an unassisted tally at the 11:51 mark to give the Generals a three-goal cushion. Washington fired 12 shots at the Generals' goal in the final period, but Lalli stopped 10 of them in preserving the one-goal victory.

Rider led W&L with two goals and two assists, while Collins tallied two goals and one assist. Molinelli added one goal and one helper.

Steven Spivey led the Shoremen with one goal and three assists, while Andrew Ostrusky notched a pair of goals.
