LEXINGTON, Va. – The Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) announced on Tuesday evening that Washington and Lee junior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) has been named the South Region Offensive Player of the Year.

The announcement comes on the heels of Monday evening's announcement that Witherell was named to the IMLCA First Team All-South Region squad.  This is the second straight season that Witherell has earned the IMLCA Regional Player of the Year honor.  Roanoke College goalkeeper Ian Davies was named the South Region Defensive Player of the Year.

Witherell, who also earned ODAC Player of the Year accolades for the second straight year, was a USILA First Team All-America selection this spring.  The two-time First Team All-ODAC honoree completed the greatest offensive season ever produced by a General during the 2018 campaign.  He broke his own school record for season scoring, totaling 91 points on a W&L record-tying 60 goals and 31 assists.  Additionally, he posted 43 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers.  Witherell tallied at least one point in every game he played (19 games) and had 15 games of four or more points, including a season-best seven points on four occasions.

A third team USILA All-American last season, Witherell currently sits in a tie for second on the school's all-time scoring list with 234 points, and he ranks fourth all-time in goals (145) and eighth in assists (89).

Washington and Lee completed the 2018 season with a 15-5 overall record and a perfect 9-0 mark in ODAC play.  The Generals produced a 14-game winning streak, tied for the second-longest in program history.  W&L received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the third round, before falling to Dickinson, 10-9, in overtime.
