W&L Men's Lacrosse Breezes to a 13-7 Win Over Sewanee

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee jumped out to a 7-0 first-half lead and cruised to a 13-7 victory over Sewanee on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Junior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) got the scoring stared for W&L (4-4) at the 11:50 mark of the first quarter with an unassisted tally, while junior attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) notched two goals and two assists during the run.  Sophomore midfielder Will Douthat (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) provided the other bookend goal with a transition score at the 9:47 mark of the second quarter.

Sewanee (4-3) cracked the scoreboard at the 8:03 mark of the second quarter when senior attackman Davis Brown (Norcross, Ga./Wesleyan School) scored off an assist from senior attackman Michael Morris (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield), but the Generals retaliated at the 4:49 mark with a goal by junior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) off a feed from senior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville).  The Tigers closed the first-half scoring with a man-up goal by first-year attackman Hayden Byrd (Austin, Texas/Westlake) off an assist from sophomore midfielder Cotter Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) at 2:07.

W&L opened the third period with a three-goal run to up its lead to 10-2 at the 11:57 mark.  Lewis scored twice off assists from senior attackman Sean Gebhard (Fox Point, Wis./Marquette University School), while Dabir tallied the third goal off a feed from sophomore midfielder Andrew Riehl (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's). 

The Tigers closed by scoring five of the game's final seven tallies.  Brown scored two goals during the stretch that included two scores during a one-minute non-releasable penalty on the Generals' bench midway through the fourth period.

W&L held a 51-35 advantage on shots and a 44-32 edge on ground balls.  Sewanee won the faceoff battle by a 13-12 count and the Tigers notched three of their seven goals man-up.

Dabir led the way with a career-high seven points on a career-best five goals and two assists.  Lewis notched four tallies, while Gebhard had one goal and two assists.  Riehl and Wood added two assists each, and sophomore defenseman Buck Armstrong (Austin, Texas/Episcopal) caused five Sewanee turnovers and picked up three ground balls.  Junior Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) played the first 49:01 in goal, notching four saves with four goals allowed.  Sophomore Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) played the final 10:59 and posted two saves.

Brown led the Tigers' offensive effort with two goals and one assist.  Morris had three assists, while Brown totaled two goals.  Senior Tommy Healy (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga) played all 60 minutes in goal and made 13 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Guilford for a 1:00 pm contest.
