W&L Men's Lacrosse Drops a 15-8 Decision to Washington (Md.)
LEXINGTON, Va. – Eighth-ranked Washington College closed the first half with a five-goal run in racing to a 15-8 victory over 15th-ranked Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse on Saturday at Wilson Field.
The Generals (2-2) received goals from junior attackmen Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Culver Academy) and Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Durham Academy) in the opening 11 minutes and change to assume a 2-1 lead with 3:41 remaining in the first quarter.
The Shoremen (2-0) seized control of the contest with a run that started at the 2:30 mark of the opening period when senior midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, Md. / Franklin) scored an unassisted goal. Senior attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, Md. / Calvert Hall) followed with a man-up goal from sophomore midfielder Sid Looney (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton) just 47 seconds later and junior attackman Sam Birnbaum (Melville, N.Y. / Half Hollows Hills East) closed the opening period with a goal off an assist from junior midfielder Luke Birnbaum (Melville, N.Y. / Half Hollows Hills East) with only nine seconds remaining.
Washington College kept the Generals off the scoreboard for the entire second period, adding goals by Looney and Cusick for a 6-2 lead at the break.
W&L began the third period with a man-up goal by junior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md. / Gilman) off an assist from Lewis at the 9:57 mark, but the Shoremen responded with two goals 14 seconds apart less than one minute after the Paglia tally for an 8-3 lead. Paglia scored his second goal with 8:20 left in the penultimate quarter, but Washington used a four-goal run sparked by one goal and one assist from Nowicki for a 12-4 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Blue & White attempted a comeback, totaling two goals from senior attackman Sean Gebhard (Fox Point, Wis. / Marquette University School) and a single tally by Lewis to make it a 12-7 game with 9:45 remaining, but the Generals would get no closer in dropping their second game in a row to the Shoremen.
For the game, Washington held a 46-41 edge in shots and a 39-33 advantage in ground balls. W&L won 14 of the 27 faceoffs on the day.
Lewis paced the Generals' offense with two goals and two assists, while Paglia and Gebhard scored two goals each. Junior Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla. / Lake Highland Prep) started in goal, making two saves with five goals allowed in 16:18. Sophomore Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) played the final 42:42 and posted 12 saves to go along with 10 goals allowed.
Washington was led by Cusick, who notched three goals and two assists. Looney registered three goals and one helper, while Nowicki had two goals and one assist. Senior Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River) played all 60 minutes in goal and notched 10 saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Franklin & Marshall for a 1:00 pm contest.
