W&L Men's Lacrosse Runs Past CNU, 14-6
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville) tallied four goals and one assist to lead the 14th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 14-6 victory over Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon at the CNU Turf Field.
The Generals (2-0) never trailed in the contest, but did not hold a lead greater than three goals until out-scoring the Captains 7-1 in the final 20:24 of the game.
W&L led 7-5 midway in the third quarter before using a three-goal spurt over 3:32 to take a 10-5 lead with 1:52 left in the penultimate frame. Wood started the run with an unassisted goal at 5:24 and senior midfielder Jack Reuter (Rockville Center, N.Y. / Chaminade) followed with an unassisted tally at 4:55. Junior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md. / Gilman) then fired a shot past CNU (0-1) senior goalkeeper Mark Hargrove off a feed from junior attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Culver Academy) at the 1:52 mark for the five-goal lead.
The Captains stopped the run with a goal by sophomore attackman Dave Magdeburger off an assist from junior midfielder Parker Thompson at 1:35 of the period, but the Generals used a 4-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
Reuter started the second run with an unassisted goal at 10:42 and Wood assisted on a goal by junior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Durham Academy) with 7:25 left to make it 12-6. First-year attackman Ryan Brady (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Jesuit) and junior long-stick midfielder Peter Schubert (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville Collegiate) scored the final two goals in the final 0:49 for the eight-goal win.
Wood got the Generals off to a good start, scoring a pair of goals in the opening 7:01 of the game to give W&L a 2-0 lead. The two teams then exchanged goals back-and-forth until consecutive scores by Wood and first-year midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) pushed W&L out to a 7-4 lead heading into the halftime break.
Nine W&L players found the net led by Wood's four tallies. Paglia and Reuter totaled two goals and one assist each, while Dabir recorded three assists. Lewis and Brady added one goal and one assist apiece. Junior Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla. / Lake Highland Prep) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded 11 saves.
Senior midfielder Adam Abbate and junior midfielder Gregory Limon led CNU with two goals each. Hargrove and first-year Matt Hayden split time in goal, combining for seven saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts 15th-ranked Denison for a 1:00 pm contest.
