SALEM, Va. – Senior midfielder Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) scored with 2:16 left in overtime to lift 12th-ranked and third-seeded Washington and Lee over 13th-ranked and second-seeded Lynchburg, 7-6, in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium.
The Generals scored four of the game's final five goals to win their 15th game of the season (15-3), tying for the second-most wins in a season in school history.
Lynchburg (12-5) held a 5-3 lead late in the third quarter, before W&L scored twice in a span of four seconds to knot the game heading into the fourth quarter. Sophomore attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) scored unassisted with 57 seconds left in the quarter to pull the Generals within a goal. Junior midfielder Jared Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) won the ensuing faceoff and fed senior attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) for a goal at 0:53 that tied the score at 5-5.
Dabir gave W&L its first lead since 2-1 in the first quarter when he scored off an assist from Heinsohn just 2:31 into the fourth quarter. The Generals' defense made the lead stand up until 3:09 remained in regulation when sophomore midfielder Campbell Armstrong slapped the ball in the goal in a loose ball scramble in front of the goal following a save by W&L sophomore goalkeeper Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep).
Mitchell won the faceoff to open the overtime period and W&L had the only possession of the extra session, which was capped by Heinsohn's game-winner, his second overtime goal of the season. His first was in a 7-6 win over top-ranked Salisbury on February 20.
