LEXINGTON, Va. – The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team out-shot Guilford, 55-19, but Quaker sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Deane (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) posted 24 saves as the Generals notched a hard-fought 9-5 victory at the W&L Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.
Deane recorded nine of his saves in the first quarter as the Quakers claimed a 2-1 lead following the first 15 minutes of play. Senior midfielder Taylor Teodosio (Ellicott City, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) scored unassisted at the 9:25 mark to give GC a 1-0 lead, before the Generals evened it at 1-1 on an unassisted tally by sophomore attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) with 4:12 to play in the opening quarter. Junior midfielder Chase Clausen (Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego) then found rope off an assist from first-year attackman Adam Fiore (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) with 1:06 left for the Quaker lead.
W&L (8-1, 2-0) evened the score at 2-2 just 41 seconds into the second period on a goal by senior midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) off a feed from sophomore attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy), and junior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) extended the lead to 4-2 with a man-up goal from sophomore midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) at 13:46. Clausen scored man-up for Guilford at 7:30 and sophomore attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) beat the keeper with an assist from senior attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) with 1:27 left in the half to make it a 4-3 game at the break.
The Quakers (4-4, 0-2) evened the score at 4-4 on a man-up goal by senior attackman Henry Farley (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) off an assist from Fiore, but the Generals used a 3-goal run to take a 7-4 lead with 4:46 left in the game. Paglia began the run with an unassisted goal at the 5:15 mark of the third period and he scored again, man-up from Means, with 10:02 left in the fourth. Junior midfielder Jack Reuter (Rockville Center, N.Y./Chaminade) then capped the surge with an unassisted goal at 4:46. Teodosio scored unassisted at 3:37 to make it a 7-5 game, but Paglia scored 37 seconds later and Dabir scored from Goldman with 27 second left for the final margin.
The Generals won 15-of-18 faceoffs in the contest, buoyed by the performance of junior midfielder Jared Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), who went 14-of-17 on the day. Paglia paced W&L in scoring with three goals and one assist, while Dabir had two goals and Goldman had one goal and one assist. Means chipped in two assists and sophomore goalkeeper Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) notched five saves in goal.
Guilford, which committed 30 turnovers in the game, was led by Clausen and Teodosio, who scored two goals each. Fiore finished with two assists.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts sixth-ranked Lynchburg for a 7:00 pm contest.
