W&L Men's Lax Downs Washington College, 11-10

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) scored four goals and assisted on another to help lead the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The game featured four ties, the last coming after the Shoremen (0-2) scored a pair of goals over 33 seconds to knot the game at 9-9 with 13:04 remaining in the contest.  Means gave the Generals (3-1) a 10-9 lead when he scored off an assist from senior attackman Scott Meehan (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) at the 6:28 mark and senior midfielder Sam Mott (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South ) provided a two-goal margin when he scored man-up off a Means assist with 5:30 remaining.

Washington College pulled to within one goal when first-year attackman Grant Hughes (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) found rope with 2:38 left.  The Generals gained possession with just under two minutes remaining and ran out the clock for their fourth straight win over the Shoremen.

W&L jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 6:46 of the game, only to see Washington College scored five-straight goals, three by junior midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) and two by junior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg), for a 5-2 lead with 12:09 left in the second quarter.

After each team scored a goal to make it 6-3 with 6:09 left in the first half, the Generals went on a four-goal run that featured a pair of Means tallies for a 7-6 lead with 7:27 left in the third period.  After another Shoremen goal, Means scored man up from first-year midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) at 3:18 and Meehan scored from junior midfielder Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) with 1:57 left in the third quarter, setting up the game's exciting final quarter.

Means' effort was supported by one goal and three assists from Meehan and two goals from first-year attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy).  Paglia had one goal and one assist and Heinsohn notched a pair of assists.  Sophomore Patrick Jennings (Reisterstown, Md./Boys' Latin) played the duration in goal and recorded 11 saves.

Cord led the Shoremen with three goals and one assist and Coyle found the net three times.  Hughes added two goals and senior Peter Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) played a majority of the game (58:55) in goal, recording 10 stops.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Swarthmore for a 3:30 pm contest.
