Marlins Upset W&L Men's Lacrosse, 11-6

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan scored eight consecutive goals across the first and second quarters en route to an 11-6 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Foster Field.

The Generals (7-7, 4-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:19 into the contest on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman).  W&L held the lead until junior midfielder Travis Puls knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal at the 8:11 mark of the opening period.  Sophomore midfielder Mikey Connors then won the ensuing faceoff and found the goal just eight seconds later to give the Marlins (8-6, 3-3) a 2-1 lead.

Junior midfielder Kyle Wright closed out the first period with an unassisted tally at the 5:37 mark and Connors opened the second period with an unassisted goal at 12:20.  Junior attackman Adam Nycz scored a pair of goals and Connors found rope again as the Marlins surged to an 8-1 advantage at the break.

Washington and Lee scored three-straight goals in the final 4:02 of the third quarter to pull within 8-4 entering the final 15 minutes of play. Sophomore attackman Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) started the scoring with an unassisted goal at 4:02 and senior attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) scored unassisted at 2:52 to make it 8-3.  Senior midfielder Drew Koeneman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) then scored unassisted with 41 seconds left to make it 8-4.

Switala scored his second goal of the day with 7:49 remaining to close within 8-5, but three-straight goals by VWC put the game out of reach.

The Generals out-shot Virginia Wesleyan, 43-31, and they held a slight 37-36 edge in ground balls.  However, W&L committed eight penalties and senior goalkeeper Tyler Keech produced 19 saves to give the Marlins their second-ever win against W&L in 21 tries.

Switala led the W&L offense with a pair of goals, while Daw had one goal and one assist.  Senior Jason Lumpkin (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) started in goal and produced four saves (8 GA) in 30 minutes of action.  Senior Ned Lundvall (Richmond, Va./Gilman) totaled six saves (3 GA) in the final 30 minutes.

Connors and junior midfielder Travis Puls each recorded three goals to lead the Marlins.  First-year attackman Andrew Adamson had one goal and two assists, while Nycz recorded two goals.
