MANHASSET, N.Y. – Franklin & Marshall erupted for four goals in the fourth quarter to post a 7-6 victory over Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse on Saturday at Manhasset High School.
The Generals (2-4) held a 5-3 lead entering the fourth period, but F&M sophomore attackman Tristan Miller started Diplomats' (3-1) rally when he scored man-up off a feed from junior attackman Colin McKew just 1:45 into the final quarter.
First-year attackman Matt Gillen scored unassisted at 11:59 to tie the score at 5-5 and F&M grabbed its first lead since 5:50 of the second quarter when McKew found the net off an assist from first-year attackman Billy Kempner with 7:37 remaining. The Diplomats capped their rally just eight seconds later when McKew scored off a Kempner assist for a 7-5 lead at 7:29.
W&L mounted a late rally when senior attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) scored unassisted with 59 seconds left in the contest. The Generals get the ball back and set up one final play with 10.1 seconds remaining, but senior midfielder Mark Wachmeister's (Wellesley, Mass./Belmont Hill) shot was just wide and F&M escaped with the win.
Washington and Lee, which held a 33-23 advantage in shots and 32-30 edge in ground balls, was paced by Daw's four goals. Sophomore attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and junior midfielder Luke Walter (Queenstown, Md./St. Andrew's School) also found the net for the Generals. Senior Jason Lumpkin (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded 11 saves.
Franklin & Marshall was led by McKew and Kempner, who tallied two goals and one assist each. First-year keeper Cameron Setian stopped eight shots in 60 minutes between the pipes.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Kenyon for a 7:00 pm contest.
