W&L Men's Lax Downs Wittenberg, 10-4
LEXINGTON, Va. – The 13th-ranked Washington and Lee men’s lacrosse team exploded for six first-quarter goals en route to posting a 10-4 victory over Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Wittenberg (1-1) opened the scoring just 2:23 into the game when senior midfielder Ted Winders (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) found the net unassisted. However, the Generals responded just 1:22 later as first-year attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) scored unassisted at the 11:15 mark.
W&L (3-0) took a 2-1 lead on a goal by senior midfielder Kevin Feeney (Summit, N.J./Summit) at the 10:36 mark of the first period and tacked on four more goals before the end of the period, including an unassisted tally by senior attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) with just six seconds remaining.
The Tigers scored a pair of second quarter goals, one by junior midfielder Mitch Cohagan (Pickerington, Ohio/North) and another by Winders, to make it a 6-3 game at the break.
Means, Keigler and Feeney all found the back of the net in the third period for a 9-3 Generals lead and each team scored once in the fourth period to produce the final margin.
Keigler and Means paced W&L with two goals and one assist each, while Feeney posted two goals and won 7-of-9 faceoffs. First-year Joe LaSala (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) spearheaded the W&L defense with three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. Senior Matt Mason (Gladwyne, Pa./St. Mark’s) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Generals and notched 11 saves.
Winders led the Tigers with a pair of goals, while junior Mark DeOliveira (East Hanover, N.J./East Hanover) and sophomore Spencer Baker (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) both played in net. DeOliveira started and allowed six goals with three saves in 15 minutes of action. Baker played the final 45 minutes and notched eight saves with four goals allowed.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Greensboro College for a 3:30 pm contest.
