W&L Men's Lax Defeats Greensboro College, 9-4

LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) tallied three goals and one assist to help lead the 10th-ranked Washington and Lee men’s lacrosse team to a 9-4 victory over Greensboro College on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Means opened the scoring at the 8:42 mark of the first period when he found rope off an assist from senior midfielder Max Mancuso (Northport, N.Y./Northport). The Generals (4-0) upped their lead to 2-0 on a goal by senior midfielder Kevin Feeney (Summit, N.J./Summit) off a feed from sophomore attackman Scott Meehan (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) at the 6:59 mark, but the Pride (2-2) responed with an extra-man goal by sophomore attackman Brad Gesser (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) off an assist from senior attackman Jordan Drumheller (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) at 4:41 of the first period.

Greensboro knotted the score at 2-2 just 1:30 into the second quarter when sophomore midfielder John Anglin (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) assisted on a Drumheller goal. Means scored off a feed from senior attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) at the 11:18 mark for a 3-2 lead and Keigler scored off a feed from Means with 11 seconds left to give W&L a 4-2 lead heading into the halftime break.

Meehan tallied the lone goal of the third quarter off an assist by first-year midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) at 6:13, but a pair of General goals, one by senior midfielder Logan Bartlett (Summit, N.J./Pingry School) and a man-up tally by Keigler, gave W&L a 7-2 lead with 13:16 left in the game. The teams traded two goals each over the final 8:01 for the 9-4 final, W&L’s ninth-straight win over Greensboro.

Means’ offensive effort was complimented by two goals and one assist from Keigler and a pair of goals from Feeney. Meehan added one goal and two assists, while first-year Joe LaSala (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) and junior Austin Wernecke (Lutherville, Md./Boys’ Latin) paced the defense. LaSala had five caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Wernecke had four caused turnovers and six ground balls. In goal, senior Matt Mason (Gladwyne, Pa./St. Mark’s) started and played 56:54, notching six saves and allowing four goals.

Drumheller led the Pride with two goals and one assist, while senior goalkeeper Matt Leach (Charlotte, N.C./Canon) registered 12 saves (9 GA) in 60 minutes between the pipes.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Washington College for a 3:00 pm contest.
