Four Generals Named to USILA Scholar All-America Team
PERRY, N.Y. -- The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse
Association (USILA) recently announced its 2009 Scholar All-America
team and Washington and Lee University had four players
honored.
The USILA Scholar All-America program honored 53 players from
Division I, II and III schools and among them were senior
goalkeeper Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St.
Agnes), senior defenseman James Shanahan (Potomac, Md./Georgetown
Prep), senior midfielder Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and
senior midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West
Essex).
The criteria for the award states that a player maintain a
cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, be an outstanding senior lacrosse
player, be named to a North-South Senior All-Star roster or be
named to the USILA All-America team. With the four selections,
W&L has now claimed 22 Scholar All-Americans since the program
began in 1989.
A business administration major, Locke was a First Team All-ODAC
and Honorable Mention All-America pick following the 2009 campaign.
He started all 20 games, posting a .548 save percentage and ranking
25th nationally with a 7.84 goals-against average. In his two
seasons at W&L after transferring from Loyola College, Locke
started 35 games and totaled a .549 save percentage and a 7.99
goals-against average.
A business administration and accounting double-major, Shanahan
earned First Team All-ODAC and Third Team All-America laurels this
year. He started all 20 games this spring and tallied 51 ground
balls, 28 caused turnovers and two assists. He also captained the
Generals' defensive unit, which ranked in the Top 25 nationally
with a 7.50 goals-against average. A four-year starter, Shanahan
played in 62 career games, totaling one goal, three assists and 113
ground balls.
A North-South All-Star, Skeen garnered Second Team All-ODAC honors
during the 2009 campaign, the third time in his career he was so
honored. An Honorable Mention All-ODAC honoree in 2008, he was also
the 2006 ODAC Rookie of the Year. The business administration major
played in all 20 games this spring and finished fourth on the team
in scoring with 39 points on 19 goals and 20 assists. He completed
his career tied for 20th on the school's all-time scoring list with
144 career points (65 G, 79 A). His 79 career assists also rank
10th all-time at W&L.
A First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-America selection this
spring, St. John was also named the 2009 ODAC Player of the Year
and ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He will also play
in the North-South game. The political science major played in 16
games this year and finished fifth on the team in scoring with 37
points (28 G, 9 A). St. John ended his career tied for 20th on the
W&L scoring list with 144 points on 104 goals and 40 assists.
His 104 goals also rank ninth on the all-time goal list.
Washington and Lee finished the 2009 season with a 16-4 overall
record and a 4-2 ODAC mark. The Generals tied the school record for
wins in a season and won their first ODAC title since the 2004
season by defeating top-ranked Roanoke in the ODAC title game,
15-14 in overtime. W&L won its first round NCAA Tournament game
over FDU-Florham, 6-5 in overtime, before falling to Gettysburg,
15-10.
