Golf at NCAA Championships

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Washington and Lee golf team shot a final round score of 316 (303-302-311-316--1232) to finish 17th out of 36 teams at the NCAA Division III Championship held at the PGA Village on Saturday afternoon.

Oglethorpe University claimed the team championship after shooting a score of 301-284-290-289--1164 (+12), while La Verne's Mitchell Fedorka and Oglethorpe's Olafur Loftsson are in a playoff to determine the individual title. Fedorka shot 67-71-74-73--285 (-3), while Loftsson fired a 75-73-68-69--285 (-3).

For the Generals, juniors Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) led the way as they both tied for 51st overall. Gibson shot 73-70-83-79--305 (+17), while Watts shot 77-75-75-78--305 (+17). Junior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) carded a 75-83-75-77--310 (+22) to tie for 76th, while junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) fired an 84-77-78-82--321 (+33) to tie for 108th. Senior Andrew Green (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) rounded out the W&L contingent, shooting a 78-80-83-82--323 (+35) to tie for 114th overall.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Washington and Lee golf team shot a third round score of 311 (303-302-311--916) to rank 15th out of 36 teams at the NCAA Division III Championship held at the PGA Village on Friday afternoon.

Host Methodist University leads the field after the third round, carding a team score of 279-303-289--871 (+7), while La Verne's Mitchell Fedorka leads the individual portion of the championship with 67-71-74--212 (+2).

Junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga,/Westminster) is the top W&L individual, ranking in a tie for 42nd place with a 73-70-83--226 (+10). Junior Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) is tied for 45th with a 77-75-75--227 (+11), while junior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) is tied for 80th with a 75-83-75--233 (+17). Junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) and senior Andrew Green (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) round out the W&L individuals. Langan is tied for 104th with a 84-77-78--239 (+23), while Green is tied for 110th with a 78-80-83--241 (+25).

Action continues on Saturday with the final round from the PGA Village.

Golf at NCAA Championships

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Washington and Lee golf team carded an opening day score of 303 on the Dye Course to tie for 19th out of 36 teams at the NCAA Division III Championship held at the PGA Village on Wednesday afternoon.

Host Methodist University leads the field after the first round, carding a team score of 279 (-9), while MU's Tom Cooper and LaVerne's Mitchell Fedorka lead the individual scoring with identical scores of 67 (-5).

Junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) leads the way for the Generals after shooting a first round score of 73 (+1) to rank in a tie for 32nd place out of 185 competitors.  Classmate Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) is tied for 52nd with a 75 (+3), while junior Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) is tied for 89th with a 77 (+5).  Senior Andrew Green (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) round out the W&L individuals.  Green is tied for 105th with a 78 (+6), while Langan is tied for 163rd with an 84 (+12).

Action continues on Thursday with the second round from the PGA Village.  The Generals will tee off at 10:20 am and will play the Ryder Course.

Golf at ODAC Championships

CAPE CHARLES, Va. -- The Washington and Lee golf team stormed back from six strokes down on the final day to claim its second-straight ODAC Golf Championship on Monday afternoon at the Bay Creek Golf Club in Cape Charles, Va.

The Generals shot 309 on the final day to win the tournament by five strokes over Guilford, who shot a final round score of 320. Quaker Peter Latimer won the individual title with a score of 73-76-76--225 (+9).

W&L finished with a three-day score of 329-311-309--949 (+85) and Guilford shot 318-316-320--954 (+90).  Roanoke finished third (956) and was followed by Bridgewater (963), Randolph-Macon (977), Lynchburg (985), Hampden-Sydney (997) and Virginia Wesleyan (1010).

Individually for Washington and Lee, juniors Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) both earned all-tournament honors after tying for fourth place.  Womble carded a score of 82-77-78--237 (+21), while Watts notched a score of 82-75-80--237 (+21).

Junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) tied for seventh overall with an 81-81-76--238, senior Andrew Green (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) tied for 18th with a 91-80-75--246 and junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) rounded out the Generals' finishers in 23rd place with an 84-79-86--249.

All-conference awards were also handed out at the competition and Womble garnered First Team All-ODAC laurels.  Gibson was named to the second team, while Watts was an honorable mention honoree.

Recipients of the ODAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, the Generals will return to action at the NCAA's on May 13-16.  The event will be hosted by Methodist University at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The Generals gained five strokes on team leader Guilford, who has carded a 318-316--634.  W&L is six strokes behind the Quakers and is followed by Roanoke (334-311--645), Bridgewater (332-313--645), Randolph-Macon (332-323--655), Lynchburg (341-317--658), Hampden-Sydney (342-325--667) and Virginia Wesleyan (330-343--673).

Golf at Emory Spring Invitational

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee golf team carded a 304-311--615 to finish fifth out of 14 teams at the Emory Spring Invitational held at the Stone Mountain Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Generals finished 38 strokes behind team champion Huntingdon College, which finished with a score of 289-288--577.  Methodist was second (294-284--578), while Oglethorpe (296-299--595), Greensboro (301-299--600) and W&L rounded out the Top 5.

W&L was led by junior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), who placed 16th out of 78 golfers with a two round score of 71-80--151.  Junior Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) finished in a tie for 27th (77-77--154), while junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) placed in a tie for 30th with a 78-77--155.

Golf at Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee golf team shot a 296 on Sunday for a final total of 286-313-296--895 at the three-day Marine Corps Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate held at the Paradise Point Golf Course in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

W&L finished sixth out of 16 teams in the Scarlet bracket and were 21st out of the 32 overall teams that played in the Scarlet and Gold brackets combined.

The Generals were led by junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), who shot a three-day score of 70-77-70--217 to place sixth in the Scarlet bracket. Juniors Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Brougton) both shot 226. Watts carded a 71-79-76--226 to place 34th, while Womble shot 74-79-73--226 to place 35th.

Senior Beau Allen (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and sophomore Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) rounded out the Generals competing in the tournament. Allen shot 71-78-78--227 to place 40th and Gavrich shot 74-79-77--230 to finish 51st.

Washington and Lee will return to action on April 13-14 as it competes in the Emory Spring Invitational.

Golf at Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee golf team shot a 313 on Saturday for a two-day total of 286-313--599 at the three-day Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate held at the Paradise Point Golf Course in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The Generals played the more difficult Gold Course on Saturday and will wait for all the scores to come in to see if they are among the Top 15 teams that will compete for the team championship on the Gold Course on Sunday.  Otherwise, the Generals will play the third round on the Scarlet Course.

After two rounds, the Generals are led by junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), who has posted a 70-77--147.  Senior Beau Allen (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) has carded a 71-78--149, while junior Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) has notched a two-day score of 71-79--150.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee golf team shot an opening round 286 on the Scarlet Course during the first round of the three-round Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate held at the Paradise Point Golf Course in Camp Lejeune, N.C., on Friday morning.  After round one, the Generals are tied for 13th out of 32 teams.

The Generals will play Saturday's round on the harder Gold Course and the Top 15 teams from the first two days will compete on the Gold Course on Sunday for a shot at the team title.

Leading the way for the Generals after the first round was junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), who carded a 70.  Senior Beau Allen (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and junior Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) both shot 71, while junior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Brougton) and sophomore Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) both notched scores of 74.

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee golf team began its spring season by carding an opening round 310 and is 15th out of 27 teams at the three-day Jekyll Island Collegiate held in Jekyll Island, Ga., on Friday afternoon.

The Generals were led in day one by juniors Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), who each shot 76. Junior Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) shot a 78, first-year Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) carded an 80 and junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) notched an 81.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee golf team carded a final round score of 339 to finish 10th out of 14 teams at the Guilford/Tom O'Briant Memorial Tournament held at the Cardinal Golf & Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., on Monday and Tuesday.

The Generals finished with a two-day score of 323-339--662 and were 63 strokes behind team champion, Methodist College.  The Monarchs shot a 299-300--599 and finished 26 strokes ahead of the second place team, Oglethorpe (305-320--625).

Individually, W&L was led by junior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), who carded a score of 75-79--154 to finish in a tie for sixth place out of 70 golfers.

Junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) tied for 36th overall with a 79-86--165, while senior Andrew Green (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) notched a score of 84-85--169 to place in a tie for 50th.  Junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and sophomore Rand Potter (Old Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) rounded out the W&L contingent with 58th and 63rd place finishes, respectively.  Gibson shot 85-89--174, while Potter shot 90-90-180.

Washington and Lee will now break for the winter before returning to action in March.

Golf at Guilford/Tom O'Briant Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Coming off a win at the McDaniel Invitational last week, the W&L golf team shot a first-round 323 and currently sits in 10th place following day one of the Tom O’Briant Invitational being held at the Cardinal Golf and Country Club.

Methodist currently leads the way with a team score of 299, while host Guilford is in second with a 302, followed by Oglethorope and Rhodes, each with 305. 

Junior Robert Womble’s (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) opening-round 74 was the low score for the Generals and has him in fourth-place overall, just three shots off the pace.

Other scores for W&L include junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) with a 79, senior Andrew Green (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) carded an 84, junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) with an 85 and sophomore Rand Potter (Old Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) with a round of 90.

W&L returns to action on Tuesday with the final round of the tournament.

Golf at McDaniel Invitational

HAMPSTEAD, Md. -- The Washington and Lee golf team shot a two-day score of 306-209--615 to finish first out of 11 teams at the McDaniel Fall Invitational held on Sunday and Monday at the Piney Branch Golf Club in Hampstead, Md.

The Generals were led by junior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), who was the individual medalist after shooting an even-par score of 71-71--142.

W&L finished four strokes better than SUNY Dehli, who shot a 306-313--619 to finish in second place.  Franklin & Marshall placed third with a score of 311-313--624, George Washington was fourth with a 308-317--625 and Penn State Altoona rounded out the Top 5 with a score of 312-327--639.

Junior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) tied for eighth place after carding a 77-78--155 and junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) finished 18th with a score of 77-82--159.  Sophomore Rand Potter (Old Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) placed in a tie for 19th (81-79--160) and first-year Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) chipped in a score of 82-81--163, good for a 27th-place tie.

HAMPSTEAD, Md. -- The Washington and Lee golf team shot an opening round 306 and is currently tied for first place at the McDaniel Invitational held at the Piney Branch Golf Club in Hampstead, Md., on Sunday morning.

FARMVILLE, Va. – Led by junior Robert Womble’s (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) second-place finish, the Washington and Lee golf team finished in third place out of 12 teams at the Hampden-Sydney Invitational held at the Manor Golf Club in Farmville, Va.

In first place after the opening day, W&L shot 309-319--628 and finished in third. The Generals were led by Womble’s second place finish after he shot a 74-76--150, just two strokes behind event medalist sophomore Matt Wagner (La Plata, Md./McDonough) of Christopher Newport who carded a 148.

Other scores for W&L include first-year Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ala./Episcopal) 76-83--159, junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) 77-79--156, sophomore Rand Potter (Old Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) 82-84--166 and senior Beau Allen (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) 84-81--165.

Christopher Newport won the event with a 312-304--616, while Averett carded a 316-310--626 to finish in second place. Randolph-Macon (310-323--633) and Roanoke (636) rounded out the Top 5.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee golf team currently resides in first place out of 12 teams following the first round of action at the Hampden-Sydney Invitational held at The Manor Golf Club in Farmville, Va.

The Generals carded an opening round 309 led by junior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), who is in second place overall and just one stroke off the lead with a 74.

First-year Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) shot a 76, junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) carded a 77, sophomore Rand Potter posted an 82 and senior Beau Allen (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) capped the W&L contingent with an 84.

W&L leads Randolph-Macon by a single stroke, while Christopher Newport (312), Averett (316) and Hampden-Sydney "A" (322) round out the Top 5.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee golf team opened its 2008-09 season with a 12th-place finish out of 16 teams at the Greensboro Invitational held on Monday and Tuesday at the Bryan Park Golf Club.

The Generals carded a 315-312--627, finishing 47 strokes behind team champion, Huntingdon College (297-283--580).

Individually, W&L was led by sophomore Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), who shot a two-day score of 79-76--155.  First-year Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) shot a 79-77--156, while sophomore Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) carded a 76-81--157.  Sophomore Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) finished with an 81-80--161 and junior Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) rounded out the Generals' contingent with an 83-79--162.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee golf team carded an opening round 315 and stands in 13th place out of 16 teams at the Greensboro College Invitational held at the Bryan Park Golf Course in Greensboro, N.C.

The Generals are being led by sophomore Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster), who shot a 76 during Monday's opening round.  First-year Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) and junior Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) both carded a 79, while junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) shot an 81.  Junior Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) also shot an 83 for W&L.

Guilford leads after the first day, carding a team score of 291.  Methodist (293), LaGrange (295), Huntingdon (297) and Oglethorpe (304) rounded out the Top 5.

Action continues on Tuesday morning with the final round.
