GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee men's golf team carded an opening round score of 304 (+20) and sits in a tie for seventh out of 19 teams at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial hosted by Guilford at the Sedgefield-Dye Course in Greensboro on Monday.
Sixth-ranked Methodist leads a field that features eight teams in the Top 26 of the Golfstat Division III rankings after day one. The Monarchs shot a +6 score of 290 and lead second-ranked Huntingdon by two strokes.
Huntingdon's Mark Connelly posted a -3 score of 68 and leads the field of 114 individuals by two strokes.
W&L is led by senior Luke Farley (Durham, N.C. / Trinity School), who is tied for ninth overall after registering a 73 (+2) on the opening day. Sophomore Brian Peccie (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) carded a 74 (+4) and is tied for 26th overall, while classmate Sean Puleo (Albany, N.Y. / Albany Academy) shot a 77 (+6) that is tied for 42nd. Puleo started his day strong, posting three birdies in his first five holes.
First-year Evans Copeland (West Point, Ga. / Brookstone School) is competing as an individual and he shot a 78 (+7) that is tied for 54th overall. Rounding out the team scorers for the Generals are sophomores Austin Harrill (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory) and Robert Quinilty (Cypress, Texas / Houston Christian). Harrill carded a 79 (+8) and is tied for 64th, and Quinilty fired an 85 (+14) that is tied for 98th overall.
Washington and Lee continues play from Sedgefield Golf Club on Tuesday with the final round.
