RICHMOND, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's golf team sent a "B" squad to the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Intercollegiate at the Stonehenge Golf Club and finished fourth out of 18 teams.
The Generals posted a two-day total of 295-304—599 (+31) and finished seven strokes behind Virginia Wesleyan, which took home the team title with a +24 score of 289-303—592. Mary Washington shot 298-297—595 (+27) to place second, while Christopher Newport was third with a 296-301—597 (+29). Bridgewater finished fifth overall at +32 with a 296-304—600.
Ferrum's Damian Beasley finished as the individual medalist with a -5 score of 69-68—137. He won by two strokes over Joey Corlett of CNU, who shot 69-71—140 (-2).
The Generals had two Top 10 finishers at the event, as first-year Evans Copeland (West Point, Ga. / Brookstone School) and sophomore Austin Harrill (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory) both tied for sixth overall. Copeland finished with a 72-74—146 (+4) and Harrill shot 73-73—146 (+4).
Sophomore Boyd Peete (Henrico, Va. / St. Christopher's) placed in a tie for 19th while playing as an individual, shooting a +7 score of 149. Junior Zack Spear (Naperville, Ill. / Wheaton Academy) tied for 33rd overall out of 98 competitors with a 73-79—152 (+10) and senior Andrew Barth (Bethesda, Md. / Walt Whitman) tied for 57th with a 78-78—156 (+14). Junior George May (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet) rounded out the W&L players in the field with a tie for 65th-place with a +16 score of 77-81—158.
The W&L men's golf team will finish its fall campaign on Monday when it begins play in the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament hosted by Guilford at the Sedgefield-Dye Course in Greensboro, N.C.
