GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee men's golf team finished in eighth-place out of 18 teams at the Tournament Town Preview held at the Grandover Resort on Sunday and Monday.
The event, which features 13 of the Top 20 teams in Division III, previews the 2018 Division III Championship which will be held at the Grandover Resort on May 15-18.
Top-ranked Texas-Tyler finished as the team champion with a +11 score of 281-289-305—875. The Patriots placed three strokes ahead of fifth-ranked Huntingdon and ninth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan, which both posted a +14 score of 878. The Generals completed the two-day, three-round event with a +26 score of 295-297-298—890, just three strokes behind third-ranked Methodist, two behind 25th-ranked Sewanee and just one behind seventh-ranked Emory.
Zach Evens of fourth-ranked Guilford finished as the individual medalist, carding a -1 score of 68-74-73—215. Three others finished at even-par (216) to tie for second.
The Generals were led by sophomore Brian Peccie (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy), who tied for 10th overall out of 90 golfers with a +4 score of 74-74-72—220. Classmate Sean Puleo (Albany, N.Y. / Albany Academy) improved by 38 spots on Monday, finishing in a tie for 15th overall after carding the low round of the day with a -4 score of 68. He produced a bogie-free round that included four birdies. Puleo finished the tournament with a 73-80-68—221 (+5).
Senior Luke Farley (Durham, N.C. / Trinity School) tied for 28th overall with a 72-73-79—224 (+8) and senior Eric Wirth (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) tied for 55th with a 78-74-79—231 (+15). Sophomore Austin Harrill (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory) rounded out the W&L players in the field with a 76-76-86—238 (+22) that tied for 74th overall.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday and Monday when it takes part in the Gordin Classic hosted by Ohio Wesleyan at the Delaware Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio.
