ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee men's golf team moved up five spots on day two on Wednesday and now sits in second place out of 41 teams at the NCAA Division III Golf Championship with a score of 305-289—594 (+22).
The first two rounds of the championship were held on two separate courses, the Par 71 Mendon Golf Club and the Par 72 Midvale Country Club. The Blue and White played at the Mendon Golf Club on Wednesday. The final two rounds of the tournament will be played at the Midvale Country Club.
The Generals carded the best round of day and the second-best of the championship with a 289. W&L is nine shots behind third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who is leading with a 286-299—585 (+13). Second-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.), 297-300—597 (+25), and No. 1 Methodist, 302-295—597 (+25), are tied for third.
Claremont's Kethan Reddy is the individual leader with an even-par 68-75—143. W&L junior Conley Hurst (Little Rock, Ark. / Episcopal) is one of a trio of players that are one-shot back and tied for second.
Hurst shot a one over-par round of 72 on day two, which included three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 16th. He has a two-day total of 72-72—144 (+1). Logan Lanier of LaGrange, 72-72—144 (+1), and Evan Cox of Virginia Wesleyan, 72-72—144 (+1), are also tied for second.
Sophomore Luke Farley (Durham, N.C. / Trinity School) currently resides in 16th out of 210 competitors with a 74-73—147 (+4). Junior Todd Alan McDonald (Little Rock, Ark. / Little Rock Christian) shot a 72 (+1) on Wednesday and is tied for 36th at 79-72—151 (+8). Sophomore Andrew Barth (Bethesda, Md. / Walt Whitman) also carded a 72 (+1) on day two and is tied for 45th with an 80-72—152 (+9). First-year George May (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet) is tied for 145th with an 80-82—162 (+19).
The Top 15 teams on the leaderboard, plus the Top 5 individuals not playing on one of the advancing teams, will play in the final two rounds of the Championship on Thursday and Friday at Midvale Country Club.
