CONOVER, N.C. – Guilford College shot a +1 score of 289 on Tuesday to pull away from Washington and Lee and claim the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference title at the Rock Barn Golf Club with a 312-303-289--904.
The Generals and Quakers were deadlocked following the first two days of competition, but W&L simply couldn't keep up with GC, shooting a 308 to finish with a 312-303-308—923 and claim second-place honors. Hampden-Sydney finished third with a 330-321-318—969.
W&L first-year Conley Hurst (Little Rock, Ark. / Episcopal) and Guilford first-year Tanner Gross finished in a tie for first-place after 54 holes and needed a playoff hole to determine the champion. Gross won on the first playoff hole, recording a par on No. 18 for the individual title. Hurst finished with a 77-72-73—222 (+6), while Gross carded a 75-75-72—222 (+6).
First-year Cody Solomon (Peachtree Corners, Ga. / Wesleyan School) finished in a tie for sixth-place out of the 49 golfers competing in the event with a 75-76-78—229. Junior Patrick Clossin (Ooltewah, Tenn. / McCallie School) placed 12th overall with an 81-77-78—236 and sophomore Taylor Stagg (Midlothian, Va. / James River) finished tied for 14th with a 79-78-83—240.
First-year Todd Alan McDonald (Little Rock, Ark. / Little Rock Christian) rounded out the Generals in the field with an 86-81-79—246 that placed 19th overall.
Hurst and Solomon were both named to the seven-player all-tournament team.
