SUFFOLK, Va. – The Washington and Lee golf team fired an opening round score of 311 and ranks seventh out of 10 teams at the Virginia Intercollegiate held at the Nansemond River Golf Club.
Bridgewater leads the way with a score of 292 and is followed by Lynchburg and Averett, who are both tied for second with scores of 300. Roanoke (305) is fourth, followed by Shenandoah (306), Ferrum (310), W&L (311), Marymount (312), Randolph-Macon (321) and Virginia Wesleyan (325).
Individually, Bridgewater's Scott Wakely and Lynchburg's Dusty Scott are tied for the lead with two-under par scores of 70.
Washington and Lee was paced on the first day by senior Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal), who is tied for eighth overall with a 74 (+2). Sophomore Jake Struebing (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) is tied for 18th with a 77.
First-year Patrick Clossin (Ooltewah, Tenn./McCallie School) and sophomore Jack Cottrill (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) both shot 80 and are tied for 35th, while first-year Joey Manzinger (Baden, Pa./Sewickley Academy) shot a 97 and is in 57th place.
The Generals return to action on Monday for the second and final round of the Virginia Intercollegiate.
