W&L Golf Finishes Fifth of 12 Teams at Hampden-Sydney

FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee golf team closed with a second round score of 311 (317-311--628) to finish fifth overall out of 12 teams at the Hampden-Sydney Invitational held at the Manor Golf Club in Farmville, Va.

Averett finished as the tournament champion by shooting a 303-300--603, while Longwood's Dylan Jensen finished as the top individual with a score of 71-76--147 (+3).

For W&L, senior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) was the top individual finisher, tying for fifth place with a 77-74--151.  Junior Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episopal) finished in a tie for 15th place with a 77-77--154, while first-year Jack Cottrill (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) tied for 30th (79-82--161).

First-year John Torell (Bronxville, N.Y./Brunswick School) and senior Tom Bowden (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) rounded out the W&L contingent.  Torell placed in a tie for 37th place with an 87-78--165 and Bowden was 43rd with a 84-85--169.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Oct. 10-11 as it participates in the Virginia State Intercollegiate held at the Wintergreen Resort.
