Gavrich Wins Pine Needles Invitational

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee golf team carded a two-day score of 324-314—638 to finish seventh out of 10 teams at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate held at the Pine Needles Resort on Monday and Tuesday.

Senior Tim Gavrich (Avon, Conn./Westminster) finished as the individual medalist after shooting a 72 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 76-72—148.

Cape Fear Community College finished as the team champion after winning a playoff against host Guilford.  Cape Fear posted a score of 308-301—609, while the Quakers notched a score of 305-304—609.  Hampden-Sydney was third with a score of 619 and was followed by Christopher Newport (628), Bridgewater (630), Erskine (630), W&L (638), Roanoke (649), Averett (655) and St. Anselm (671).

Other individuals participating for W&L were first-year Jack Cottrill (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), junior Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal), first-year Jake Struebing (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) and sophomore Will Hatfield (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day).  Cottrill tied for 22nd with a 79-79—158, while Anthony tied for 24th with a score of 82-77—159.  Struebing carded an 87-86—173 to finish 45th and Hatfield shot  89-86—175 to place 47th overall.

Washington and Lee returns to action on March 25-27 at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate held at the Paradise Point Golf Club in Camp Lejeune, N.C.
